What about a law to protect people with blue eyes, people who are short, people who walk with a limp, people with acne, etc. etc. etc. These people are nuts. A crime against a person is a crime.
you dont choose to have blue eyes, i dont think they should be protected either though.
I can get behind that particularly since I fit the description, although the limp is due to a bruise on my heel and is temporary...but I would retain my special privileges after it heals, right. I mean I limped for a while. Is there money in this for me. Can I sue?
Yeah, and what about polygamists, prostitutes, bigamists, flashers, pornographers, swingers, intergenerationalers, strippers, druggies, alcoholics, liars, cheaters, and all other lifestyle choices? What makes gays more special than other lifestyle choices?
I think there ought be protection for short middleaged blonde, blue eyed females!
Now it will be a crime to even THINK "homo" or "queer".
Crimes should be defined by clear facts, as ACTIONS that violate the rights of another person, regardless of what that person's race/gender/nationality/ethnicity/sexual practices may be. When we start making crimes against some but not others "hate crimes" by trying to peer inside someone's brain to determine whether they are said to 'hate' a certain category of people, we have simply expanded the leftist conception of "thought crime"..... Think of the converse: let's say person X commits the same violent act against someone who happens to be a "caucasian heterosexual male".... somehow that's a lesser crime because it doesn't include the thought component of 'hate' for gays, etc.??????? Anyway, until the PC-police start including black-on-white "hate crimes" in their litany it will continue to be obvious that they operate with a highly selective and distorted conception of 'hate'.....
This is not all it does

Not at all. The motive behind any crime is as important as the crime itself. It helps us figure out if it was accidental or malicious, lets us find an appropriate way of punishing (and possibly rehabilitating) the offender, among other things.
Classifying hate crimes are done so because the minorities that *typically* (not all the time) are the victims, are *typically* (again, not all the time) targeted more than the "people with blue eyes, people who are short, people who walk with a limp, people with acne, etc. etc. etc." because they are perceived to be different in a way that often scares the offender.
No, a minority cannot commit a hate crime, because only white people hate. (sarcasm on/off). Unbelieveable, but true. that case of the asian shooter killing 5 white men on their private property because they were white is Not a hate crime.
