After two days of intense legal questioning, Supreme Court nominee John Roberts finally addressed a subject most Americans could relate to: His favorite movies are "Doctor Zhivago" and "North by Northwest."
Frustrated by Roberts' answers, Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., suggested on Wednesday that if he dared to ask the nominee his favorite films, he would get a discussion of cinematography and why "Casablanca" is considered one of the greatest. Instead, Roberts answered flat out, bringing laughter from the audience and senators alike.
"North by Northwest," Alfred Hitchcock's 1959 classic, starred Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason and Martin Landau, and included a death-defying scramble on the face of Mount Rushmore.
"Doctor Zhivago," the 1965 film directed by David Lean, was described as "a love caught in the fire of revolution" and starred Omar Sharif, Julie Christie and Rod Steiger.
I don't think anyone dies in "Ninotchka" (at least none of the main characters), but maybe that doesn't count as a Russian movie.
What's interesting is that these fools, who are full of themselves, don't realize that he is playing with their egos!!!
ditto
Lara' Theme" is, and will always be, one of my favorites. I hear it everyday on CD.
actually i may be the worst speller on FR
and i pretty much don't care about the spelling police.
also, spell check wouldn't catch intent would it?
last time i drank one pint was still spelled pint.
:-)
The funny comeback with the named movies was the appetizer. The real zinger was what Roberts said next:
"And the great danger, of course, that I believe every one of the justices has been vigilant to safeguard against is turning this into a bargaining process.
It is not a process under which senators get to say, "I want you to rule this way, this way and this way. And if you tell me you'll rule this way, this way and this way, I'll vote for you."
That's not a bargaining process.
Judges are not politicians. They cannot promise to do certain things in exchange for votes.
And if you go back and look at the transcripts, Senator, I would just respectfully disagree. I think I have been more forthcoming than any of the other nominees. Other nominees have not been willing to tell you whether they thought Marbury v. Madison was correctly decided. They took a very strict approach. "
Roberts immediately turned the table on Schumer. Unfortunately I doubt the MSM caught the fileting of Schumer.
HEHEHE Now that was funny! Nicely done my friend.
