MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Shaquille O'Neal has been credited with an assist away from the basketball court, following a suspect who allegedly assaulted a gay couple and alerting police.

The 7-foot-1 Miami Heat center, who is in the process of becoming a Miami Beach reserve officer, was driving on South Beach about 3 a.m. Sunday. That's when he saw the man, riding as a passenger in a silver Honda, yell anti-gay slurs at the couple, said Bobby Hernandez, spokesman for the Miami Beach Police Department.

I don't like bottle throwers. It doesn't make a damn bit of difference to me who they're aiming at.

What kind of car was Shaq driving? Was he inconspicuous?

I don't think "Shaq" and "inconspicious" go together...

He did pay for George Mikan's (one of the original stars of the NBA) funeral a few months back when Mikan's family had trouble with the expenses.

Shaq is one of the more decent men in pro basketball. He says he will be in law enforcement when he retires.

Shaq signed up to be a reserve officer after 9/11. He wanted to do something useful in the off-season. He was raised by his stepfather, a Marine sergeant, and by all accounts is a solid, decent guy.

I know if I were Joe Average Miami cop serving an arrest warrant, I'd love to have Shaq standing behind me, arms crossed and game face on. Without saying a word or moving a muscle, his presence alone would convince a lot of folks to give up without a fight.
