Katrina has displaced hundreds of thousands of Americans who now need food, housing, and cash. Relief for those necessities will have to be temporary and it will be many months before they can return to New Orleans, if ever, so what they need most of all is jobs.
Our government should act immediately to put these displaced Americans in the jobs now held by illegal aliens. Some 10 million illegal aliens are now working in our country, so there is no excuse for not replacing a million of them with unemployed American citizens.
President Bush should announce an immediate crackdown on employers of illegals and set up a hiring database to match up the unemployed with jobs.
Remember how Bush was talking glibly about inviting "willing workers" to come here from other countries? We should give affirmative-action preference to willing workers from Louisiana and Mississippi.
Meanwhile, the Senate voted $10 billion and then another $50 billion for hurricane relief, and that's all deficit spending. Why not take that money out of . . .

This is the same as the pre-Katrina argument that you could solve two of the biggest problems in our country with one action: deport all illegal aliens and discontinue wellfare. Welfare recipients could more than cover the labor shortage. This is one of the best ideas I've ever heard but it will never happen for two big reasons. 1 - no politician in office today has the stones to take on the fevered whining and hating that the left would put out (who would probably successfully classify said politician as a poor-hating racist). 2 - those who have been living off the government teet since Johnson gifted us this great society have no work ethic and have not gained a single job skill during their time on the couch.
I live in NE Okla. and my cbusiness alone has taken in about 20 of these NO "refugees" with rewally crappy pay (a lot less than they were getting, accrodign to their applicationa anyway. so I know that SOME want to work...
I seen a whole bunch of "refeugees hauled in the back of a pick up truck from the army base they are staying in, direct to the liquer store.... hmmmm, food for thought, tho I can say I would want a drink too.

Best thing for these poor folks is to find them jobs.
Maybe HEAVY FINES (enforced) on those who hire illegal aliens? Oh, I forgot, it's already illegal to hire illegal aliens.
In the Bush/Clinton/Bush push for global government, American laws have been trampled. We peons are the only ones who have to follow the laws.
We had just moved to Michigan at that time. I was shocked at the bleeding heart stories in the paper, a man who had been out of jail for 6 months, had no family or dependents and he was crying that they were taking away his food stamps! I worked for a short time at Meijers in Holland, and there were a group of ladies hired at the same time I was that had moved there from Illinois because the wellfare laws were more lenient, and now they had to get jobs! How unfair was that? Engler was an excellent governor, too bad there were term limits.
"Maybe HEAVY FINES (enforced) on those who hire illegal aliens?"
Obviously, and fines aren't enough. I want to see jail time for executives who allow the hiring of illegals.
They'll never see jail time - they're GWBush's buddies and campaign contributors, and none of them give a crap what we think, or how angry we are when we're forced to finance this illegal alien mess.
Work? You've got to be kidding. They're holding out for 9/11 type payouts so they'll never have to work again.
I actually enjoy mowing lawns and when I was unemployed I seriously considered getting a job with a lawn service. But due to taxes and high cost of insurance I looked until I could find a job with good benefits.
"They'll never see jail time - they're GWBush's buddies and campaign contributors, and none of them give a crap what we think, or how angry we are when we're forced to finance this illegal alien mess."
GWB just signed an executive order suspending part of the labor laws that say companies have to pay the prevailing wage of the area they're operating in. I'm seeing this as a prelude to the companies involved in the re-building of NO to hire illegals. Wait and see.
Nothing will change until some laws are passed that equal the drug laws.
If you allow illegals to use your house, your house gets confiscated. If you are a contractor and you pick up illegals in your truck, your truck gets confiscated. If you have illegals working at your business, your business gets confiscated.
Then tell the Border Patrol that for now on their job security, pay, raises, and benefits are tied to the revenue generated by these laws and you might just succeed at curbing the problem.
You can never get government workers to actually DO THEIR JOB, unless you tie their compensation to GETTING THE JOB DONE! They know if they don't get the job done, they can just cry for more money and both parties are more than happy to oblige.
I disagree. Illegals are illegally in this country, ship them back!
Huh?
I didn't say anything about illegals. I just pointed out that the Evacuees are not going to work when they can get paid to sit on their a55es and watch TV.
"Remember how Bush was talking glibly about inviting "willing workers" to come here from other countries? We should give affirmative-action preference to willing workers from Louisiana and Mississippi."
Why do you think he says that? Look at the welfare state laid bare in front of you. The President probably feels we need to import a new 'working class' because the one we have won't work. Heck, Senator Landrieu even said so herself. "Can hardly get 'em to work on a sunny day." We can thank LBJ's Great Society for all of this.
And there is also this...
September 10, 2005 - Feds Relax Hiring Rules For Storm Vicitims Who Lost Documentation: employers can simply state a potential worker was unable to provide documents because of the hurricane, according to a Homeland Security spokesperson. The policy is being implemented nationwide and subject to review in 45 days. [Thread]
I'd like to know the answer to that as well. Since I am from SE LA, I know several "evacuees" and they are looking for jobs. I don't know anyone sitting in a hotel room, drinking beer, watching the money pour in. In fact, someone in my family has lost their home, all their material belongings, etc. Where is the husband today? At work.
I am really getting tired of coming to Free Republic, a place that I have really enjoyed being in the past, and seeing my hometown and all my neighbors being trashed. Don't believe everything the MSM tells you. I know quite a few people who were in the Superdome, traveled to the Astrodome, and are dispersed all over the U.S. I know them because they *worked* with one of my relatives in New Orleans just a few weeks ago and have now lost every material possession. There are a lot of working people in those shelters, though I understand that it may be hard to believe based on what you're seeing in the media. Are the lifelong welfare recipients there too? Of course.
I can tell you that all the talk down here is about two things. First of all, we have all been incredibly touched by the outpouring of support and love from all over the USA. The other hot topic is the pain that we all feel watching our hometown trashed in the media and on the internet.
The United States doesn't need, nor has the United States ever needed, illegal alien workers. Any job currently held by an illegal alien can be filled by an American worker or a legal immigrant worker. If we need additional workers, Congress can increase the number of legal immigrants that are allowed into the United States.
