Iraq: Jihadist Group Announces Chemical Attack On Baghdad
AKI ^

Posted on 09/13/2005 5:05:00 AM PDT by jmc1969

For the first time, terrorists linked to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi are claiming to have struck the Iraqi capital Baghdad with chemical weapons. The claim was made in a statement published on the Internet by Islamic group al-Taifa Mansura (The Victorious Side) which is part of the al-Qaeda network and close to its Iraqi representative, al-Zarqawi. The same group last Sunday threatened to attack the Green Zone in Baghdad with missiles containing chemical warheads unless the Americans halted the ongoing offensive against the city of Telafar.

A short while ago, in a second statement the group claimed responibility for missile attacks on central Baghdad from 8.30am till 10am local time on Tuesday morning. The message alleged that chemical weapons hit the interior ministry, the foreign ministry and the American training school which is also located in the heavily fortified Green Zone.

Iraqi police have confirmed that there were several explosions this morning and eyewitnesses say plumes of smoke could be seen rising above central Baghdad. Lieutenant Thair Mahmoud of the Emergency Response Unit told journalists there had been one mortar attack and other blasts were heard nearby. He said there were no immediate reports of casualties. Other reports say there were as many as five explosions, either inside the Green Zone or immediately outside.

The firing of five rockets was confirmed by an Islamic site close to the Baathist-inspired guerrillas - islammemo - which referred to at least four rockets with chemical warheads. The site, which tends to publish unreliable biased news reports, celebrates it as the first chemical attack in Iraq."

It wouldn't be the first time they tried to use chemical weapons, remember last year they tried to create a sarin IED and it failed.

I can't think of very many better reasons to stay in Iraq then terrorists trying to create chemical weapons.

Well it is clear that they are still using drugs.

They're Muslims -- Islam is their drug. Let's hope they "overdose" in increasing numbers.

A dozen Mohammeds eating beans and cabbage and then farting loudly in unison hardly constitutes a chemical attack.

The mortar shells did contain some chemicals...the explosives that injured no one.

Really!? What about Saddam and his henchmen Chemical Ali ... who were killing innocent civilians with chemical agents 20 years ago?

They don't keep score in the same way we do.

As I've said many times before, we could be there ten years and have a totally functional Iraq when we leave.

But if there is one 'resistance fighter' left in Fallujah to give us the finger as we fly out, he will be hailed as the Lion of Fallujah, the Great Hero that drove out the Satanic Americans.

I hope the story is WRONG. This would be unfortunate news. My thoughts are with our troops and the Iraqis.

Waiting to see if this is confirmed by DEBKA.

They're still adjusting their toil foil hats.

WMD? They should have remained mum about such toys.

They had useful idiots in America believing that Saddam really did destroy all he had and that no rogue nation would sponsor their production or storage.

You can count on there being individual resistance persons (who may not fight but still oppose America).

There are STILL Japanese soldiers surrendering/being discovered this far after WWII. There was a thread/article last year or this year.

Doesn't mean that you will find any strength or threat from them.

The insurgents against the Northern occupation of the South after the Civil War in America could be the KKK. How many on the left would cheer them on?

A terrorist is a terrorist and they absolutely know that Saddam will never come back to power.

Aha! The definition of a chemical attack: An attack made while the attackers were ON chemicals!

The difference is that the Japanese don't hail those last few as heros that drove out the Americans and the Southerners don't revere KKK members for ridding the South of the Yankees.

This is impossible. There were no WMD's in Iraq. It was all a lie. Remember?

If these weasels have any chem weapons, they will use them on unsuspecting civilians. In that respect, a Baghdad attack makes sense.

Were no WMDs in Iraq. But since we went in two years ago, the freedom fighters gained access to them, from a totally unrelated source. (Wait for the previous charge to be hurled by Dems!)

First suspect: Karl Rove.

Agreed. I hope there is a strike-back plan poised to fire away.
