The Dem playbook
The Hill newspaper gives us a peek at the Democratic playbook for the Roberts hearings. Below are the attack assignments for the Democratic members of the Committee:
Kennedy -- civil rights
Leahy -- Bybee torture memo
Biden -- privacy, personal autonomyand the 9th Amendment
Kohl -- Property rights and civil liberties
Feinstein -- "judicial activism" and Roe vs. Wade
Feingold -- limits of executive powers
Schumer and Durbin have wisely refused to show their hand.

Leahy didn't lay a glove on Roberts.
Moreover, I'll trade 3 days of grilling for 30 years as chief justice any day. Let the babbies whine on.
That is the liberals' approach. To hell with wht the law says, we've got to be concerned for the "unfortunate", "disenfranchised", yadda yadda yadda.
You will hear that kind of crap all week from the RATs.
Hatch breaks it down.
You can say that again.
I'd be thrilled if it is Edith Jones, but I'm betting on the equally capable and conservative Emilio Garza.
Hatch is actually asking very probing and SUPERB questions..
Sen. Hatch just urinated on Sen. Spector's idea of a "super duper precident".
Depends on your blood Pressure, Specter lead off, he asked about abortion and Robert's faith.
Another value of Roberts' confirmation as CJ..figure he serves 25 years..and averages 3 law clerks per annum....I'd wager that 25 years fom now, 10+ of his clerks will be on the federal bench..many of those on the circuit courts..and maybe even one SC Justice..
Leave it to Nosferatu to make me appreciate Orrin Hatch.
I'm afeared that the boy is no Scalia or Thomas. He seems awfully deferential to stare decisis. Doesn't sound like he'll be inclined to overturn Roe.
heard a phrase I don't like "good for the legal system"
Novak says it gonna be the lady from Texas..Priscilla Owen, and Novak is NEVER wrong, right?
The next appointee will be a woman. Among other considerations, Laura Bush wants the President to nominate a woman.
I love Senator Hatch, you can tell he actually has practiced law, unlike the pretenders on the other side who have law degrees, but never practiced at all, or if they did it's been over 30 years ago.
Leahy followed by badgering Roberts about a bunch of small cases when he worked in the Reagan White House and the Solicitor General's office....not too effective. Leaky was upset Roberts didn't want the Congress involved in commanding the troops--he thinks that is the President's job. The SG question was regarding a case Roberts lost before the Supreme Court. Roberts insisted the Congress didn't address the issue of "compensation" for an abuse case, but the Supreme Court said it did. Leaky was all over the boards.
Hatch is up now, asking what kind of philosophy Roberts will adopt.
doesn't Kennedy follow Hatch?
what do you expect him to say?..he's there to get on the bench..period..do you resallu think that W doesn't have any idea what Roberts thinks or feels about these issues...this whole process is Kabuki theater..
Just got here myself, read the first 40+ and then jumped in toward the end....worked for me.....DOn't forget to listen at www.cspan.com (c-span3)....Can listen while your doing other things.
Arghh! That means it's not Owen..why couldn't he be like Kristol and say it was going to be Gonzales?..poor Priscilla, first one out of the gate is rarely it.
