The Hill newspaper gives us a peek at the Democratic playbook for the Roberts hearings. Below are the attack assignments for the Democratic members of the Committee:

Kennedy -- civil rights

Leahy -- Bybee torture memo

Biden -- privacy, personal autonomyand the 9th Amendment

Kohl -- Property rights and civil liberties

Feinstein -- "judicial activism" and Roe vs. Wade

Feingold -- limits of executive powers

Schumer and Durbin have wisely refused to show their hand.

Leaky appears a tad offended by the "vastly over reading" statement. Love it!

Yep, like a burr under the saddle.

They know they can't stop this nomination so they're using their time to attack Bush.

Wow...what a concept!

Leahy has always depended on hectoring and bullying and it's NOT working on John Roberts!

NOPE!! It sure isn't! I just love the expressions on John Roberts face when Leaky poses a stupid question!

Leaky doesn't seem to know the meaning of COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF of the Armed Forces.

How insulting for Judge Roberts to be grilled by these morons...I bet he thinks he's losing brain cells just answering some of these questions.

Leahy actually has a pretty good question. "Congress can declare war, can Congress end a war."

Roberts' answer is that it depends on the particulars. Congress controls the purse strings, Roberts pointed out, so it can defund a war. Just as a curious Constitutional question, Leahy's question is interesting. I wish Roberts had a better answer. One would think that Congress does not give a president the authority to wage war in perpetuity. Indeed, Roberts might have mentioned the Revolutionary War, where Congress was poised to quit fighting and negotiate with England several times. Washington was always able to talk them out of it. That history (and I realize it predates the Constitution) perhaps gives us a lesson.

All that said, Leahy is still a tool, though he's not being as big a schumck as I expected him to be. Kennedy and Biden, I trust, will not disappoint.

It was Leahy, Biden and Teddy that voted against Roberts in his first hearing, correct?

Roberts will be CJ long after Leahy is moldering in the grave. It galls Leahy as it galls all narcissists.

I think Mrs. Roberts is shocked and appalled by the questions her DH is getting. The poor woman hasn't moved her lips...she is so stunned.

Leahey must have his crack-cocaine stash under that 'appletree' he sits under to ponder serious matters.
