An Indonesian court has sentenced to death the main defendant on trial over last year's suicide car bombing outside the Australian embassy in Jakarta that killed 10 people.Iwan Dharmawan, alias Rois, stood up waving his fist in the air and shouted "Allahu Akbar" (God is greatest) after the verdict was read out.
Prosecutors had accused Rois of buying the vehicle and other materials used in the bombing, and of recruiting the driver who drove the vehicle.
They had also said Rois, 30, worked closely with the accused masterminds of the strike, Malaysians Azahari bin Husin and Noordin M Top, who are both fugitives and said by police to be senior members of the Al Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiah network.
Rois has denied he was part of the attack, saying he did not know the materials he bought were later used to make a one-tonne bomb that was stored in the van he purchased.
The court has jailed three other men for terms of between 42 months and seven years over the car bomb, which tore through the blast-proof fence of the fortified Australian mission.
An islamikaze extremist? Gee, that's a first. /sarc
Give him about 30 seconds to yell whatever he wants. Then carry out his sentence in the most painful (and not necessarily the quickest) way possible.
Don't forget publicly
