Just reported that Delta will file for Chapter 11 within 48 hours.

My words - Northwestern won't be far behind.

According to Webster's Collegiate, hock = pawn dates from 1883, and derives from Danish hok, prison. Nothing to do with ham hocks, or "hawk".

Where'd you get that notion, anyway? Been polishing it for forty years, I'll bet.

Southwest is a real trip, get there really early and get in line for best results.

The are two things that I really appreciate about Southwest: they have extremely efficient and reliable service, and they have never once screwed me over in hundreds of flights. Other airlines that I fly on routinely, such as American, have screwed up badly more times than I can count in far fewer flights.

I tend to value efficiency and reliability in airlines first and foremost, with comfort following a distant second and competing with cost effectiveness.

Any foreign airline (well, almost any) has better service than Delta.

In the NOT column, I would place Air Canada and Aeroflot.

The flight attendants were old and totally disinterested in the passengers.

Stewardess used to be a job where pretty young ladies went to find a husband, not a lifelong career.

Continental was vastly improved after Frank Lorenzo got fired. The only decision of Frederico Pena's that I agree with was barring Lorenzo from any further participation in the airline industry.

Hock and hawk have distinct meanings, and distinct etymologies. The only confusion is in your own mind, in your hurry to attack Reuters, who, for once, do not deserve such ire.

Don't have a photo, but I understand that the original Southwest Stewardesses were all hotties.

"SouthWest is unionized. They're doing OK. AirTran is unionized. They're doing OK. The airline I work for is unionized. We're doing OK.

I don't know if JetBlue is unionized but it was a pleasant experience. When I looked in the cockpit and didn't see a steering yoke it did shake me up a bit. They had this round arcade like wheel on the left of the pilot. Airbus, of course. Fly by wire stuff, which you and I know means the opposite.

Since I fly through Atlanta so much I will really miss Delta. Let's hope they get out of Chapter 11. We need the competition.

Fortunately, I have a Webster's dictionary. Here's what I see:

hock3 (häk) vt., n. [[< Du hok, kennel, cage, prison]] [Slang] PAWN1

What part of "slang" don't you get? Or did you think that slang doesn't have an etymology, and can't be even centuries old?

So, should I go ahead and get a ticket certificate for my frequent flyer miles?

I'm not sure they can go all that far out on hedge contracts. Do you know when they expire?

You are correct that those future contracts show outstanding management - too bad Delta and some others didn't do the same.

Actually, the Chapter 11 would be a great benefit to Delta. Their plan can include getting out of lots of unfavorable leases and contracts and, if the judge approves, those leases and contracts are up in smoke. Trust me, a federal bankruptcy judge is the most powerful force in the legal area.

Is Continental still owned by that POS that destroyed Eastern?

No need to get in line for Southwest. You can check in online at 12:01 am on the day of your flight and get the A boarding status.

Continental was vastly improved after Frank Lorenzo got fired.

I forgot about that. One thing about Continental that is impressive is their newer fleet. Northweat and United love to torture people with 25 year old DC 9's and MD 82's.

After I hit "post" I saw message 48.

Back a long time ago, I worked for a company that supplied items to EAL. I knew a bunch of the old Eastern people and I tried to tell them to work with the astronaut ( Bormann? ) and quit the name-calling. They didn't stop fighting him, and as a result I believe he sold out to the biggest crook he could find to spite them.

OK, I won't press it any further, because it's a trivial point and I'm probably wrong on the etymology. My argument was with using slang in a journalistic article, but I agree that journalism standards don't exist anymore anyhow.
