THE JOY OF FAKE FACTS! (Somerby rips Landrieu and MSM)
The Daily Howler ^ | SEPTEMBER 12, 2005 | Bob Somerby

Posted on 09/12/2005 2:13:37 PM PDT by jackbill

Even when people are suffering and dying, they just won’t stop making up facts:

THERE’S NOTHING ABOUT MARY: We thought Chris Wallace was a bit unbalanced in the way he went after Mary Landrieu on yesterday’s Fox News Sunday. (Senator David Vitter, R-LA, appeared with her.) On the other hand, Landrieu’s performance was so utterly woeful that it deserves recording. Being good liberals, DAILY HOWLER readers care about the poor—and we care about little else. Surely, therefore, we will all want to condemn this senator’s hapless performance.

SNIP

In a prize fight, a referee would have stepped in and called the whole thing off. Already, this may have been the worst performance ever seen on a Sunday show. But now, Wallace posed his second question—and Landrieu’s response, if anything, was worse. Gaze on the caliber of public official now defending the interests of the poor: WALLACE: Senator Vitter, do you think it was—and I'll get you in this in a moment, Senator Landrieu—do you think it was “incompetent and insulting” for Governor Blanco not to bring in the federal guard—or, the National Guard, rather—into the city of New Orleans in force until Friday of that first week? VITTER: Yes.

WALLACE: Senator Landrieu?

LANDRIEU: Can I—

WALLACE: Yes or no?

The die had been cast—how had Blanco performed? Wallace had asked an obvious question. But just try to believe Landrieu’s “answer:”

SNIP

Why didn’t FEMA know about the Convention Center by Wednesday night or Thursday morning? Chertoff said they hadn’t been told by local officials; for ourselves, we’ll wait for more reporting. But as usual, your lazy, half-assed millionaire “journalists” didn’t feel like waiting for facts! Having decided that Brown was the target, they invented a pleasing tale—a pleasing tale with embellished facts, the only kind of “fact” they really love.

What was the real chronology? In fact, the first real reporting about the Convention Center broke on cable on Thursday, September 1; it had barely been mentioned before that, and the first video turned up on Thursday afternoon. It didn’t appear in newspapers until Friday. But so what? Your powdered “journalists” always improve the facts in these utterly pleasing cases. This time, they played the pseudo-lib side—but, as always, they embellished their “facts.” Even when people are suffering and dying, they just won’t stop making up facts.

Great job!

It's just grunt work. Here is the rest of the Convention Center collection. Some of my comments interspersed. It does help to clarify how events unfolded. Time was surreal while the events were "live."

Another point: the people in the convention center BROKE in there; most of them are the ones who have left the SuperDome because they are refusing to go to Houston. The Convention Center was NEVER set up to be a shelter.
And.......even if these people decided to stay despite the order, I heard the mayor of New Orleans tell them all to have three to five days worth of food and water for each person because they might not be able to get help to them for a few days. Where is their food?

Why are we not hearing this as a suggestion on the news? After Andrew, other spaces were considered, but keeping the people as close as possible to home was made possible by this tent city, and it gave all the residents some sense of normalcy, however little it was. On another note. FEMA head on CNN is saying they just found out about the Convention Center people today. I can only see this as the failure of the NO local officials to accurately see the ENTIRE situation.

The Morial Convention Center is HUGE. You would think people would gravitate to it. PLus it is right near the riverwalk.

The tourists being abused inside the convention center are being HELD HOSTAGE. They cannot leave of their own free will (if they are still alive). Hopefully they will still be alive if the police go in.

Buried in the NY Times:
The police superintendent, Eddie Compass, estimated that perhaps 100 armed people were inside the convention center and that he was considering a plan to restore order there with a force of perhaps 500 police officers and national guardsmen.

Mr. Compass said that some stranded tourists who had sought shelter at the convention center instead found trouble. "The tourists are walking around there and as soon as these individuals see them, they're being preyed upon," he said.

Donald Dudley, a 55-year-old New Orleans seafood merchant, complained that when he and other hungry refugees broke into the kitchen of the convention center and tried to prepare food, the National Guard chased them away.
"They pulled guns and told us we had to leave that kitchen or they would blow our damn brains out," he said. "We don't want their help. Give us some vehicles and we'll get ourselves out of here!"

Martin Savidge at the convention center - very dangerous. A NO police officers passes by in an SUV and does nothing, Martin pushes a mic into the car and he just says "people are coming" and just drives away.
this is really starting to feel like LA after Rodney King - this time, its the governor who seemingly has made a conscious decision to not restore civil order, to make FEMAs job harder.

I'm sorry, but they just had a maudlin report about the convention center. The reporter reports that a Blackhawk helicopter touched down and dropped off a large amount of bottled water. MRE's also dropped off. The reporter than intoned "But it is literally a drop in the bucket" and finishes off sadly...back to you Rita.

Rita (full of energy), head bouncing: What a sad story.

And then to the next topic. Weirdly funny.

Did anyone just see the report on MSNBC about the convention center. They have NO supplies there FGS. It's something I cannot imagine, where is the water? Food?

It's criminal at this point that the police just pass by without any word of when help will come.

769 posted on 09/01/2005 9:17:22 PM EDT by WestCoastGal

They have water and MRE's. The reporter let this slip at the end. A Blackhawk helicopter dropped off a large load of bottled water and he mentioned that they had MRE's also.

Live on LA police scanner.
State EOC just asked Pelican base if food or water had been delivered to the Convention Center today.
Pelican Base (don't know who this is) states they don't know and need to confirm.

Air drops wouldn't do much with armed thugs around. They'd just confiscate the goods. I heard a woman at the Convention Center say that some of the thugs that had looted groceries, etc. were selling water to the people for $5 a bottle.

1,425 posted on 09/01/2005 10:41:28 PM EDT by dawn53

But we don't. The thugs rule the streets

Horseshit. I haven't seen anything other than anecdotal evidence that "thugs rule the street." Some local officials are using that as I cop out as to why more isn't being done. FEMA isn't reporting that it is hampering their efforts. The Coast Guard hasn't reported it hampering their efforts. Get real. I didn't see any armed thugs stopping anyone from delivering food or water to the folks at the convention center (which they did eventually.)

I thought I'd try one of your links since WWL is down for the night. I saw a clip of people in front of the Convention Center. I'd seen something similar earlier, but this clip included a young diabetic girl.
There was one nurse screaming for insulin, which they were able to find and revive her. I am in tears. I'm diabetic myself, and I can't imagine being in America and dying in the heat, in a major city, for lack of insulin. God almighty.
Where is the help??

The FEMA director just confirmed to Paula Zahn exactly what I've been saying all day long. NO never bothered to tell FEMA that people were IN the Convention Center (because they broke in there) and that's why there wasn't any food or water there!
The Convention Center was never designated a shelter!

2,515 posted on 09/02/2005 2:25:41 AM EDT by Howlin

Yes...the city directed people there and didnt tell FEMA. And if they were all inside until the waters receded today, how would crews see them?
But of course, NBC did their best to spin the situation. There was one clip of guys looting food out of the Convention Ctr kitchens, I think they were Snapples.
It used to be a nice building....have been there before.

Did anyone see CNN. They were interviewing someone who's at the convention center and instead of stating the facts he said "genocide is going on". That's what I thought I heard, then I changed the channel because I didn't want to listen to a stupid rant. They really need to screen their interviews.

I wasn't online at all yesterday. I just kept watching the tube with my jaw hanging open. I saw the FEMA guy on every channel, several times, all day. He was on already again this morning saying FEMA had been getting help to the people at the Convention Center "for days." He said they had been evacuating people there as well. I've been watching television and haven't seen that at all. I had heard or been given the impression that the people at the Convention Center were the rioters. But I saw black and white people helping each other and babies dying for lack of water. What's the deal? They got news crews down there. Can't they get a crate or two of water there?

2,874 posted on 09/02/2005 7:31:15 AM EDT by Types_with_Fist

When I hear the FEMA guy claim that they have taken care of the people at the Convention Center, and then turn on FNC/MSNBC/CNN and see people packed in there like cattle, I have to wonder if the FEMA guy truly knows what he is talking about or whether he's got his head in his rectal orifice?

2,897 posted on 09/02/2005 7:43:01 AM EDT by mhking

That's what I was saying earlier. All the FEMA guy did yesterday was television interviews. I mean... one right after the other on all networks and radio shows. Fine. Give an interview or two. But I'd like to know just when he does his job. I heard him say this morning they had been getting help to those at the convention Center "for days." Total BS.

WWL Updates as they come in on Katrina
6:42 A.M. - BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- The head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency is trying to make clear that the government understands how dire the situation is in New Orleans.
There's been a growing chorus of complaints from refugees and the city's mayor, who complain about what they say has been a slow federal response to the hurricane, flooding and lawlessness.
Mayor Ray Nagin said last night that the feds "don't have a clue" about what's happening. Mike Brown tells CNN he didn't know the New Orleans Convention Center was being used as a staging area for evacuees until he saw news coverage. He blames that on a lack of communication with city officials. As Brown puts it, "we don't know where everybody is."

2,934 posted on 09/02/2005 8:00:19 AM EDT by bwteim

The following is the result of an interview I just conducted via cell phone with a New Orleans citizen stranded at the Convention Center. I don't know what you're hearing in the mainstream media or in the press conferences from the city and state officials, but here is the truth:

"Bigfoot" is a bar manager and DJ on Bourbon Street, and is a local personality and icon in the city. He is a lifelong resident of the city, born and raised. He rode out the storm itself in the Iberville Projects because he knew he would be above any flood waters. Here is his story as told to me moments ago. I took notes while he talked and then I asked some questions:

Three days ago, police and national guard troops told citizens to head toward the Crescent City Connection Bridge to await transportation out of the area. The citizens trekked over to the Convention Center and waited for the buses which they were told would take them to Houston or Alabama or somewhere else, out of this area.

The convention center debacle has been in the news for the past two days. Last night, the radio traffic asked if there had been water or food delivered there yestereday. And the answer was -- I don't know.
Sure, there are plenty of people working hard, but there are many in power and in the ranks who let the city down.

[The first mention of the Convention center on the running Katrina thread was 410 posted on 08/31/2005 8:44:57 PM EDT by PhiKapMom. The most detailed early press report was Times Picayune article dateline Wednesday, August 31, 11:09 PM. CNN and MSNBC had a smattering of reports around 12:30 AM on September 1st.

Then "all is quiet" in the news, for 12-14 hours from 1 AM on Thursday, the 1st, until early afternoon of the 1st. The media was not vigorously reporting the Convention Center until it made the evening news on the 1st. But the story petered out overnight, and was -NOT- a big story until late on Friday the 2nd.

The Convention Center wasn't a refuge center..it was broken into and the word spread "go to the Convention Center"..there were 88 cops that tried to go to restore order and the were beaten back by a mob group.
How is it FEMA's responsibility to be aware of somewhere that people are that they went on their own and broke into and then proceeded to rape and pillage?
FEMA works according to order and plans, put this here, go here.
The majority of people left in New Orleans have never understood order and plans.

This is making me sick. On WWL they are talking about it being the feds fault. They are saying that Nagin is a hero for being the one to speak up and tell the President that this is what needs to be done and needs to be done now. They are making some big deal about the President's point man not knowing on Thursday about the convention center. Well, it freaking sounds like the GOVERNOR didn't know about those people!!

I noticed that CNN and MSNBC managed to rotate their reporters at the Convention Center for the past couple of days. Did they bother to tell anyone that they had 15,000 people there in desperate need?

I guess I just can't comprehend that they were able to move in and out for two days, but the City couldn't manage the same trip.

Did anybody watch CNN this morning? I was wondering if Soledad had any explanation why CNN has been filiming the tragedy at the Convention Center the last three days, but never bothered to bring food and water to the crowd? does CNN lack the resources to help citizens in need? Do they beleive that only the government can help the people? Or do they know that by solving problems they reduce the ratings bonanza of exploiting the tragedy?

Interview ended. Radio anchors are posing the question why yesterday they couldn't at least get sufficient water and some food to the Superdome, I-10 sections with people, and Convention Center when the TV trucks could get in and out?
Good question, since those areas (at least the first two) were under at least some semblance of police/NG control.
Now saying that need army to keep control. They are being positive, talking about listeners doing the right thing, don't join the criminals.

She said she found a dead 14-year old girl at 5 a.m. on Friday morning, four hours after the young girl went missing from her parents inside the convention center.
"She was raped for four hours until she was dead," Joseph said through tears. "Another child, a seven-year old boy was found raped and murdered in the kitchen freezer last night."

Actually, the Democratic plan was to
have the levee fail,
leave the poorest of the poor sitting on their roofs,
having them scattered to other parts of the country,
start a construction/economic boom and
get a lottery bonanza in kickbacks.

All on the Federal Government's check.
