New York Sen. Hillary Clinton is renovating and enlarging her Whitehaven mansion in Washington, D.C. so she can host even larger fundraisers - in the property Democrats already refer to as "the White-House-in-waiting."
She is gutting and remodeling the first floor of the home and adding a 1,000-square-foot room on the back, reports the New York Post. The improvements, which are expected to cost $1 million, include a new raised terrace that will overlook a quarter-acre of perfectly manicured gardens when the work is finished in Feb. 2006.
"A lot of this is social one-upmanship," political scientist Larry Sabato told the Post. In Clinton's case, however, the improvements will help "guarantee that the RSVPs will pour in."
"I don't think you can overestimate the importance of Hillary Clinton and her network of contributors to the competitiveness of the Democratic Party," ex-DNC chairman Steven Grossman told the London Telegraph.
The neo-Georgian mansion "is already known by irreverent Democrats as the "White-House-in-Waiting" and "Fund-raising Central," the Telegraph said.
The Clintons purchased the property, for $2.8 million in January 2001. But with D.C. property values soaring in recent years, Whitehaven is now valued at $4.2 million
"I guess when you have stacks of FBI files, it's pretty easy to get money."
You don't think she's using any of the bonus money from her book?
Hillary is as much a threat from becoming a distraction to countering other viable democrats, as she is in her own ambitions.
I thought she spent all of that money to buy the place. IIRC they just got done paying off their legal bills.
This is good for a lot of them too.
Heck no! The Clinton's never pay for anything. They begged money for their legal bills even after her big bucks for her lying herstory book.
"We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good."

FMCDH, PIAPS.
I was pondering today about Clinton's purloined files. Aren't they getting a bit out of date?
Sorry, FReepers, I forgot to mark my comment with sarcasm.
It depends what was in them. Certain things never "get out of date."
"Don't cry for me Argentina!"
Will the real Evita Peron pleeeze stand up!
What an expense! All of this while Hilary complains about the victims being ignored in New Orleans.
Hillary Rotten Clinton, aka 'The Hildabeast, aka Hitlery, and Former First Madam of The Clinton Whitehouse Of Ill Repute, is actually enlarging her House, so she can do more Business. That is how, she will raise money, aka Filthy Lucre. Now, all she needs is a red ligt, out in front.
Wonder who bought the house for them? Certainly wasn't their money. Oh yeah, dont' they go out and raise money all the time? Where does it go?
I know. Most people work hard to make money then to save it to buy a home, car or whatever. not the clintins...they have to go out and BEG for people to let them use their vacation homes so they'll have a nice place to stay. They beg like common beggars all the time. You'd think they would have some shame but then again, we're talking abut the most disgraced couple ever to step foot in the white house.
Worst president in the history of our country. bar none!
She's having to try harder this time cause she knows there are people out there who can rip her a new one like Giuliani. He would sink her desires in a heartbeat. She may get the nomination but she won't win. There have been too many women in their party who have proven they can only be leaders when things are going well. Hit them with a tragedy like Katrina and they fold and cry like blanco and landireu.
It's amazing how these two people came to Washington without ever owning a house, are now rich enough to own two mansions, and spend enormous sums of money on renovations. What ever happened to public service.
ever heard of whitewater?
