I'm sure that there was some of that too. But the police dept. in NO is filled with corruption. 2 of their former officers are on death row. Thats sad to say about law enforcement.

I keep reading about how cops/firemen never showed up to help out. That is the complete opposite of what happened in NY. Off-duty cops and firemen came back in to help out if it were at all possible.

NY has its problems, but there's a reason our police and fire departments are among the best there is.

Police officers and soldiers did another house-to-house sweep of hurricane-ravaged New Orleans (search) Friday, taking firearms away from gun owners and trying to convince those who'd refused to leave their homes to get out to avoid disease and fire.

We will assure our citizens are helpless against predators in this city.

If I were in a position to have to trust Bill Krystol, there is no way in hell that I would or could. He continually goes with the flow that will enhance his "reputation".

Yes, his wife and family were at the shelter in Dallas. Can you believe that? He's got plenty of money to stay in an apartment there but he's getting freebies instead.

I thought it has been said by some of the libs down there in NO, that they had many women bus drivers and they were AFRAID" duh.

There was no more violence before the hurricans than usual so what were they afraid of. The water hadn't come in, the hurricane hadn't hit. uh

"In this case, Brown was expendable with lots of other people ready to step up. Although I do think he got a bum rap, it will all end up ok."

Someone being sacrificed because of lies by the MSM is never ok.

Only those with bus certification can drive buses. The unions will not let a civilian drive a bus in Louisiana, or Texas, or many other states.

I think that needs to be reevaluated in the case of emergencies. I wonder how that 15 year old learned to drive? Did he have a learners permit? What is the legal driving age in Louisiana? Where were his parents?

500 cops left town? Before or after they started committing suicide because they couldn't stand any more?

It's possible. Resignations have to be done very carefully, IMO. There are mistakes that are normal human failings, and mistakes that are moral/policy failings.

For instance, even if Secretary Rumsfeld has made a few mistakes, it would be politically stupid to fire him, because it would be tacit admission that a policy was wrong...which it is clearly not.

Firing him would make it would appear that confidence in the policy was wavering and that would be dangerous. Therefore, Rumsfeld stays with full confidence of the President even when tiny things go wrong.

In the case of Brown, the President basically admitted that the initial policy appeared to be wrong and that they needed to do better. Rather than fight the perception, which would be so much noise at that point, Brown gets tossed out of the boat and Voila! a new, efficient, effective policy emerges. Even if it is the same policy, it has a new face and suddenly things look brighter.

So essentially, resignations are political moves to reframe the argument when necessary. It's sad to look at it so politically when lives are at stake, but the truth is...thus is the world in D.C.

Why thank you! She's my favorite author. Even though my favorite book is Persuasion, this particular line comes from the 1995 Pride & Prejudice mini-series (I'm ashamed to admit that I've seen it so many times that I cannot remember if it's a direct quote from the book). It pretty much sums up my attitude -- it's not that I don't take things seriously, it's just that I'd rather laugh than cry.
