LA Sen. Landrieu: Sunken buses are because administration doesn't believe in mass transit [huh?]
Fox News Sunday | September 11, 2005 | John Jorsett (me)

Posted on 09/11/2005 9:57:10 AM PDT by John Jorsett

I was just watching Fox News Sunday interview Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, and I couldn't believe what she was saying. Here's my transcript of part of it. Sorry if I've mangled any of the proper names; I'm not going to go to the trouble of looking them up:

Chris Wallace: "Was it incompetent and insulting for Mayor Ray nagin to order a mandatory evacuation, but then to leave buses -- and we have a picture of them -- hundreds of buses idle so that they could be flooded instead of using them to get people out?"

Senator Landrieu: "Well, Chris, I was there as you know through the whole ordeal with state and local officials, and was right there with Louisiana Democrats and Republicans, city council members, police chiefs, mayors, and governors. And could watch what Hayley Barbour was doing and Governor Reilly in Alabama. I am not going to level criticism at the local level. These people did ..."

Wallace: "But I'd like to answer if you could this one significant question ..."

Landrieu: "I will answer it. I'm not going to level criticism at local and state officials. Mayor Nagin and most mayors in this country have a hard time getting their people to work on a sunny day, less [sic] alone getting them out of the city in front of a hurricane. It's because this administration and administrations before them do not understand the difficulties that mayors, whether they're in Orlando, Miami, or New Orleans face. In other words, ..."

Wallace: "But but wait. Senator. Senator ..."

Landrieu: "... this administration does not believe in mass transit. They won't even get people to work on a sunny day less [sic] alone getting them out ..."

Wallace: "But Senator. Senator, there were hundreds of buses sitting in that parking lot ..."

Landrieu: "... less [sic] alone getting them out ... I'll tell you why ..."

Wallace: " ... can I just ask the question?"

Landrieu: "You can, but let me finish ...

Wallace" "Well ... well ... well there were hundreds of buses ... if I might ... here, we're looking at a picture ... there were hundreds of buses in parking lots. THe city ... It wasn't underwater before the evacuation."

Landrieu: "Those buses were underwater ..."

Walace: "They weren't underwater on Sunday ..."

Landrieu: "We had two catastrophes. We had a hurricane and then we had a levee break. When the levee broke, not only did New Orleans go underwater, but Saint Bernard went underwater, and Saint Tammany parish went underwater ..."

Wallace: "But they weren't underwater on Sunday ..."

Landrieu: "... and Plackman went underwater. And because the mayor evacuated the city, we had the best evacuation between Hayley Barbour and Kathleen Blanco of any evacuation I've sen. I'm 50 years old, I've never seen one any better."

Walace: "But there were 100,000 people left in the city."

Landrieu: "They did 100,000 people left in the city because this federal government won't support cities to evacuate people, whether it's from earthquakes, tornados, or hurricanes. That's the truth, and that will come out in the hearings."

Hello,

Thanks so much for the info, I am glad to say that I have not totally lost it (at least for today!). Now, did this occur, and if so did anyone here see it? Fox was really hyping this presser, even doing a "News Alert".

Glad to be here, MOgirl

"Bush v. Landrieu, Madison Square Garden"

Bush doesn't have to dirty his fingernails on this one. I'll take the b*tch out for him.

Actually, the Senator is both stupid and desperate.

Just for laughs, you could call the press release's number for the governor's spokesbeings and ask them what happened.

we had the best evacuation ...of any evacuation I've seen

If true, how can Bush be to blame for anything?

What a moron.

This just needs repeating. About 12,000 times.

Dear Senator, if this is the best evac EVAH . . . then the problem is . . . what?

Ironic that it was the black voters of New Orleans that Jesse Jackson drummed up at the last minute that allowed Landrieu to squeak to victory in the last election (using those same buses to get them to the polls).

Yep. As someone said, if Landrieu had been half as effective bussing people out of N.O. as she was at bussing people to the polls, we'd not be having this discussion.

Even more ironic, however, is that the very people who helped Landrieu squeak to victory are the people most likely to NOT return to NO.

Besides the fact that there's nothing to return to, they will have gotten a taste of life off the plantation. I'm sorry for the circumstances, but maybe some will actually turn this tragedy around for themselves.

Lousyanna is a universal joke in Texas. They been evacuating to here for decades. Most Texans older than 20 and with an IQ over 80 avoid the place.

Maybe in some circles but you are speaking of the LA government - right? Some might think you are speaking of the people and I just wanted to clarify.

Hello,

Just for laughs, I did call the governor's spokesbeing's number and spoke with Ashley. The last that Ashley heard was that the Governor was "running late". I asked if the presser was still going forward and she said she did not know.

A day late, a city short, that's Gov. Blanco's way, MOgirl

It's up to a federal official-I would bet Landrieu means the President himself,in person-to come to NO and make sure that the people get on the buses and are driven to safety BEFORE the buses go under water?

Then they'd be crying about how paternalistic Bush was, he didn't think a big city mayor even knew enough to use buses to evacuate residents to higher ground, it was out of racism that he rushed in to do the mayor's job.

A loon, a complete loon.

If the people of the great state of Louisianna don't throw ever dem out of office, there is no hope for them. Of course, my people in the great state of NJ probably won't throw the dem bums out either, so there is definately no hope for us.

Question is will the people of New Orleans "wake-up and smell the coffee?"

Only if it's free coffee!

Would you happen to have a shot of the final split-screen with her and the Republican Senator? Chris said, "Thanks to you both for coming." She didn't say a word and looked cold as ice - and she was the one sitting in the studio next to Chris.

Right now she's being interviewed on Fox. It's pathetic. She's got her rehearsed speeches, and she just launches into them, paying little or no attention to the question

They won't even get people to work on a sunny day...

I smell another focus-group-tested line. Maybe the people don't go "to work on a sunny day" because they're too engrossed in discussing "kitchen table issues."

...Mayor Nagin and most mayors in this country have a hard time getting their people to work on a sunny day...

That's a racist remark considering that most of the city is African American and therefore so would be most of the city workers.

this administration does not believe in mass transit.

Gee, Mary, not even in an extreme emergency, not even to bus them to safety ahead of a deadly storm, thereby saving lives and preventing the suffering some still endure waiting for basic necessities? Good to know.

I just saw the replay here in Los Angeles. Wow, she looked angry, bitter, and defensive. Her mouth was even twitching. When Wallace pointed to hundreds of buses all flooded that could have saved a lot of people, she kept saying it was all Bush's fault and don't you dare blame state officials. HUH?! This woman is beyond hysterical, she's nuts!!!

She hates Fox. All the RATS do. They only do interviews on Fox cause they have to. This woman looks like she's about to have a breakdown of some kind.
