Spectators at the Great State of Maine Air Show watch members of the U.S. Special Operations Command Parachute Team Saturday. The air show continues today from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

BRUNSWICK — Thousands stared into the noontime sky Saturday, searching for a C-2A Greyhound. A pair of commercial jets passed over Brunswick at about the same time, and many mistook them for the military aircraft that was about to send two elite paratroopers hurtling toward Earth at 120 mph.

Some were still searching for the plane when two clouds of pink smoke, released by the paratroopers so the audience could see them from a distance, began tracing a line from 12,000 feet in the air to the runway at Brunswick Naval Air Station.

The landing drew a roar from the crowd, one of many during the first day of the Great State of Maine Air Show - a day marked by clear blue skies, extraordinary performances in the air and passionate protests on the ground.

...

Anti-war demonstrators de- scended on the facility's main gate at about 8 a.m. with signs protesting the Navy's use of the Blue Angels flying team as a recruiting tool during a time of war.

It wasn't long before a counter-demonstration began across the street, with a small group holding signs supporting President Bush and the occupation of Iraq.

...

"It's the day before 9/11. Our kids are still over there fighting," said Kathy Clay, 49, of Brunswick, as she eyed a group of more than 100 anti-war activists across Route 24.

Amazing that there were 100 anti-America demonstrators - out of maybe 40,000 people there. That makes up a quarter of a percent of the folks.

But the Press Herald used about a quarter of the coverage on those loons.

I think they were most likely supporting the LIBERATION of Iraq.

Very Good!
We have an air show coming up at Oceana Naval Air Station shortly, and had one earlier at Langley Air Force Base. No anti-war types showed up at Langley, and none are expected at Oceana. If they do show up - like is expected at William and Mary next weekend – they will have to be ignorant out of towners. Ignorant of how seriously some of the locals take their patriotism.

What is wrong with these people...????????? For Pete's sake, the Blue Angels (and their Air Force counterparts, the Thuderbirds) are proud American institutions and should be honored and appreciated, and not panned. Will someone please smack these anti-war imbeciles??????

Cool!

I love airshows. I went to the Hanscomb, MA, one years ago with an old high school buddy. I've missed every one since. There was this tiny little one-man jet (may Coors?) that was unbelievable.

That, plus the Harrier jump jet was too much.

They represent the best America has to offer and the protesting scumbags HATE America.

But the Press Herald used about a quarter of the coverage on those loons.

They're just deeply saddened that "Mother Sheehan" bailed out on showing up for the protest.

If Cindy had made an appearance all of the coverage would have been used on the loons.

They have their agenda don't they? When the TRT was protesting the Million Mom's at the state capitol in Denver we out numbered the MM's but the TV news made it look like we only had ten people there.

Snowrip, did you get to the counter-protest? If so, please report from you and other freepers!

dredges of society. Always have been and always will be. No contributions to their country at all. Only protesting, burning flags, shouting nonsensical words and living off everyone else. Dredges of Society plain and simple and none of them have an intelligent thread in their body.

Too bad the aircraft weren't carrying any ordnance. On their last pass before landing they could have expended it on the moonbats.
