Feds relax hiring rules for storm vicitims who lost documentation - FEMA gets in on it
SunSentinel ^

Employers won't be fined for hiring victims of Hurricane Katrina who lost their documentation, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

This week's decision by federal officials is aimed at helping those displaced by the deadly storm. But instead, the temporary measure has renewed an old debate over the role of employer sanctions for hiring undocumented workers.

~snip~

But employers can simply state a potential worker was unable to provide documents because of the hurricane, according to a Homeland Security spokesperson. The policy is being implemented nationwide and subject to review in 45 days.

I think EVERYONE should now write and call with complaints about this to FEMA, to Chao especially, who has been a veritable cheerleader for illegal aliens in the U.S. ("the United States NEEEDS these workers" she says on every television appearance she's made long before the Hurricane arrived in the Gulf).

"And if there is anything Mexicans are good at, it is construction"

Should be good for nothing at, slow, inept, and everything they do is half assed. The only thing they are good at is cheap and the only reason they are cheap is no taxes, insurance, or benefits are paid on them.

Won't it look odd when all the workers are Mexican, when everyone knows that "all" the victims are black?

Once again, how do you propose dealing with a person who wants to work and who doesn't have proof of citizen ship? Do you deny them work? Do you deny them any form of assistance?

Turn them over to the INS if they can't prove their citizenship, just like the law states. That's right bucko, there are laws dealing with people who can't prove they are citizens. If you don't have legal ID, there are laws you have to deal with. Life can be a bitch, but if you don't have ID, you brought it on yourself.

So unelected, unaccountable bureaucrats nullify a law passed by congress.

How interesting. When were bureaucrats granted the power to run the United States according to their whim?

From WoC "news"wire - Speaking through a Spanish language interpreter one man, Malcolm Bridgetender, said he'd lost his birth certificate, SSN card, and drivers license. Federal and Louisiana state officials told the interpreter to tell Mr. Bridgetender that he'd be issued replacement documents and a debit card immediately. . . .

-Immigration officials insist the government will still go after employers who hire illegal workers...-

Still? I wasn't aware that they even STARTED doing that.

So then they also do not need documentation that they are
even storm victims?

Great time to pull the Border Patrol off the Border..

Have the BP been sent back to guard the border yet or are
they still in the Katrina zone?

The purpose of my post was not to "green light" the employment of illegal workers.

As I understand it, under federal law if you or I apply for work we must provide proof that we are legally entitled to work in America. Without this "paperwork" we are out of luck.

For the people displaced by the storm, I think it is reasonable to defer on this requirement as many are legal citizens who may have been displaced without the chance to take along much more than what was in their wallet. Common sense would dictate that they should not be denied the chance to get a job and get on with their life. This is similar to the EPA waiving the fuel formulation standards (I recall for a few weeks or a month) to allow the supply of gas to not become restricted.

I am a bit aged, although not old in my mind, but I remember an America where to get a job you showed up and were willing to work.

To be really legal you presented a social security number so you could pay into our wonderful retirement system. Today, I do not think it is so simple.

President Fox said his country shared the pain of the hurricane. An estimated 140,000 Mexicans were affected, he said, and 70,000 are unaccounted for.

They are in Commiefornia, Vincente! ~~~Sarcasm~~~

So you would deny all forms of assistance to an American citizen too who just happened to have lost his documentation? Quite frankly, I'm shocked at your callous disregard for your fellow citizens. I recognize the need to deal with illegals but I think your desire to deal with the problems of illegal immigration has blinded you to the need to deal with this disaster.

Get real, big guy. These folks did not bring this hurricane upon themselves. The fact that some American citizens may have lost their ID in a hurricane is not their fault. It seems you think arresting a few illegals is far more important than assisting your fellow citizens.

What is the status of the records in New Orleans - especially the birth certificates? Did the records survive or were they all destroyed? Were there digital or microfilm copies stored somewhere safe? Or will every Juan and Juanita be able to claim that they were born in New Orleans and that's why they don't have a US birth certificate?

Well, that's one way to 'backdoor' millions of illegals right into mainstream America.

Well excuse me. If you lost your ID, whose fault is it? I guess it's Bush's fault. Get real pal, if you lost your ID, surely you could remember your Social Security number. Now tell me that if you have your SS#, the government cannot figure out who you are. It's not rocket science to prove who you are since we have the best buearacracy that money can buy.

As for the second part of your comment, arresting a few illegals IS assisting your fellow citizens, and following the law. Is that OK with you?

Just being able to rattle off a SSN, does not establish that you are an American citizen.

"Now tell me that if you have your SS#, the government cannot figure out who you are. It's not rocket science to prove who you are since we have the best buearacracy that money can buy."

I guess we should drop everything to check a SSN. No food, no water, no medical care, no jobs until our great bureaucracy finds the time to verify your citizenship?

"As for the second part of your comment, arresting a few illegals IS assisting your fellow citizens, and following the law. Is that OK with you?"

Delaying assistance to those in need is NOT OK with me? I'm sorry to hear that it is with you.
