Feds relax hiring rules for storm vicitims who lost documentation - FEMA gets in on it
SunSentinel ^

Employers won't be fined for hiring victims of Hurricane Katrina who lost their documentation, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

This week's decision by federal officials is aimed at helping those displaced by the deadly storm. But instead, the temporary measure has renewed an old debate over the role of employer sanctions for hiring undocumented workers.

~snip~

But employers can simply state a potential worker was unable to provide documents because of the hurricane, according to a Homeland Security spokesperson. The policy is being implemented nationwide and subject to review in 45 days.

It is common practice to hire locals for fema staff.

I predict this will be an illegal magnet.

Imagine what the race baiters will say after this.

Call me crazy, but I believe a good way for some of these undocumented workers to earn their citizenship would be by rebuilding with their blood sweat and tears an American city.

After a year of service to America at minimum wage working in New Orleans they get a green card and fulfill their dreams and have a real stake in this country.

September 4, 2005 - Conroe City [TX] Councilman Jay Ross Martin encouraged those [evacuees] seeking temporary work to go to the day labor site... They probably have a better chance now because a lot of the normal workforce [illegal aliens] has been picked up to do cleanup efforts in the affected areas ]the gulf coast], Martin said.

September 5, 2005 - President Fox said his country shared the pain of the hurricane. An estimated 140,000 Mexicans were affected, he said, and 70,000 are unaccounted for. But now, he said, the contributions of Mexican workers could be more important than ever. "The reconstruction of that city and of that region is going to require a lot of labor. And if there is anything Mexicans are good at, it is construction."

In other words, they're lifting citizenship requirements for labor entirely, given that anyone can claim to be a Katrina refugee without any proof whatsoever.

Get ready for an increase in illegal border crossings. Our gov has opened the door (like it was ever closed) for the hireing of them.

Lights come on - bells chime - whistles blow - the border bursts wide open . .

We will now see a flood of illegal aliens from Mexico that will make the last five years of illegal immigration look like perfect government operating at optimum efficiency.

Also from the article: "Immigration officials insist the government will still go after employers who hire illegal workers while the policy is in effect, according to a spokesperson."

While I am sure that some of the illegals living in FL, AL, MS etc will use this to their advantage I think that for the people of the Gulf Coast and NO this is a bit of common sense.

First, most of the displaced are slightly darker than the average person from south of the border or they speak with a very distinctive accent. Many of these folks fled the storm or have been moved. Other than the ID in their wallet/purse getting additional proof may be difficult or impossible.

For the displaced folks trying to get going again lets get out of the way. Later we can try and get the ones (including employers) who took advantage of the system.

Just my two cents.

Do you realize how many *legal* residents of LA, MS, and AL are out of work now due to Katrina?

Why should illegal aliens cash in on our catastrophe?

My thought exactly.

New Orleans had 28% unemployment before the Hurricane Hire those people first.

Now another thought, : That 28% probably didnt want work to start with.

Last week, I predicted New Orleans would be rebuilt by illegals and Mexicans will probably be the predominate population of the rebuilt New Orleans.

Ah, exactly how would you have an evacuee prove his citizenship? Do you propose that anyone with out a birth certificate be denied work? I'm sure you have a well thought out plan to deal with the fact that most evacuees do not have suitable documentation.

So it is a "fact" that most of the evacuees don't have proof of who they are? Bull. What about S.S. numbers, drivers licenses, etc.? I'm willing to bet that the majority of evacuees without any form of legal ID are illegals to start with.

"...President Fox said his country shared the pain of the hurricane. An estimated 140,000 Mexicans were affected, he said, and 70,000 are unaccounted for..."

So, Fox DOES KNOW how many illegal aliens are in the U.S.!

And here he's been pleading innocent to the stats, that they even exist, doesn't know a thing, never heard of them, can't account for it, who can ever know...

Sure, some, perhaps most can prove citizenship. Some or most isn't the issue. Once again, how do you propose dealing with a person who wants to work and who doesn't have proof of citizen ship? Do you deny them work? Do you deny them any form of assistance?
