Former US president Bill Clinton urged China yesterday to recognize the urgency of the environmental threats to its growth, and to use the Internet as a tool to surmount them. But he remained silent on the risks faced by those who use the Internet as a forum for dissent."You will have to come to grips with significant challenges to your growth," Clinton said at an Internet conference in this eastern resort city, warning that the energy consumption required to keep China's economy growing at its recent rate of more than 9 percent is "unsustainable."
Clinton, the keynote speaker at a conference hosted by Yahoo's new Chinese partner, Alibaba.com, did not respond to questions from reporters about demands by human rights activists that he raise the case of a jailed Chinese journalist with his hosts.
Just days earlier, overseas-based human rights groups disclosed that Yahoo Holdings (Hong Kong) Ltd had provided e-mail account information that helped lead to journalist Shi Tao's conviction and 10-year prison sentence on state secrecy charges.
Other Chinese journalists have faced similar charges of violating vague security laws as communist leaders struggle to maintain control of information in the burgeoning Internet era.
Despite government information sharing requirements and other restrictions, Yahoo and its major rivals have been expanding their presence in China in hopes of reaching more of the country's fast-growing population of Internet users who now number more than 100 million.
Of course not Hal

Amazing how all out politicians tiptoe around China and its brand of Communism, but we rail at Cuba and NK and Syria, et. al. Question, how much money ARE we getting from China? It must outrageous.

Yes. Cuba, NK, and Syria are socialist and their human rights abuses are so extreme that nobody even pays attention anymore. China is no longer socialist (though not ideally capitalist either), and whether you want to believe it or not, DOES have higher human rights standards than the other 3 you listed as a result.
Money now rules China...Communism still rules Cuba...and Syria...is just Syria. Oh, and lets not forget North Korea and its God-Master-King-the appointed one...the Kim.
alibubbba and the 40 Thieves :)
Some secret, China. You have been shushing up Tiananmen Square in every possible way for years and everyone knows it.
A soldiers family ask Yahoo to let them have the emails from their son killed in combat and Yahoo refuses.
Shame on Yahoo.
This is the man who signed into law the 1997 S.936 Feinstein Amendment. What else could be expected, being mute is better than being a hypocrit.
Typical Democrat Socialist. The very last thing of real importance is personal freedom.
The founding fathers would die to see what this party would make of their Constitution.
Who cares what Clinton says anymore... when is the real president going to stand up to the Chinese?
Uh, China was never socialist... it is an extreme Communist dictatorship, with no freedom of speech, press, worship, right to trial.. right on down the bill of rights. The commies never had problems sitting down with the capitalists and talking cold, hard cash. They'll do business with us (remember Lenin's line - we'll sell them the rope by which they'll hang themselves). Well, they're selling us everything to the point where nothing is being made in the USA.
Or maybe we'll just keep an economy growing buying and selling each other's houses...

Well said !!
Yes, Well said! I wonder if Betaille understands that this forum will now be censored in China, simply because of what you said. Some of the 10's of thousands of Internet censors will block it. I guess I was thinking that the Democrats constantly scream that they are the party protecting rights. But they roll over (Republicans as well) when ever money enters the discussion. That was my real complaint.
