Republican Jerry W. Kilgore is leading in the Virginia governor's race despite efforts by Democrat Timothy M. Kaine to tap widespread satisfaction with Gov. Mark R. Warner's performance, according to a new Washington Post poll.

Among all registered voters, Kilgore is ahead by 4 percentage points as the campaign enters its final two months. His lead widens to 7 percentage points among those most likely to vote.

Kilgore, a former attorney general, has cast himself as the perfect fit for a traditionally conservative state.

I noticed that the article didn't poll for Lt Governor and Atty Genl.

I know they're "down the ticket" races - but seeing the polling data could give us a better idea of whether the GOP will sweep all three races in November.

has anyone out there heard anythign regarding these other races?

A win by Kaine would be a big boost to Mark Warner's presidential prospects, let's hope Kilgore wins.

I'm confused. The Washington Post said yesterday the GOP will be hurt by Katrina. And now it seems Kilgore is widening his lead?

Excellent news from the WaPo no less. Bush's approval was 47% in this poll - probably a nadir. If he goes up even a little, I think Kilgore wins in a rout. Virginians are very smart.

Jerry Kilgore for Virginia Governor!

This is great news! Post-Labor Day polls count. Everyone should be helping with phone banking and voter identification for the Get Out The Vote (GOTV) efforts!

For those needing to register to vote in Virginia or request an absentee ballot, download a form and mail it in by 5:00 p.m., October 11.

No, his lead has been quite steady in the polling data I've seen.
