Ophelia Strengthens, May Hit Southeast

A hurricane watch was posted Saturday for the Southeast coast as Ophelia strengthened into a hurricane once again and meteorologists said its meandering course could take a sharp turn toward land.

A hurricane watch was posted along a 300-mile stretch from the Georgia-South Carolina line to North Carolina's Cape Lookout, meaning hurricane-force wind of at least 74 mph was possible by Sunday evening, the National Hurricane Center said.

North Carolina's governor declared a state of emergency as the storm's track shifted northward with a forecast landfall on the North Carolina coast next week.

The storm wasn't close enough to North Carolina that a decision had to be made on whether to order evacuations.

South Carolina officials said a decision would be made soon about whether to order evacuations, but Charleston County announced it would open shelters Saturday evening for voluntary evacuees from low-lying areas and barrier islands.

If Ophelia makes landfall in South Carolina it would the third hurricane in 13 months to strike the state. Hurricanes Charley and Gaston hit the South Carolina coast last season in the same general area.

It looks like the same path Diania took in 1984. It could hit Wilmington right on but it could hit Myrtle Beach, SC.

It could hit ANYWHERE. I've been watching the tracking maps and laughing. This is one really confused hurricane.

two computer models had it hitting Wilmington NC and one had it skimimg the coast of NC, and the rest had it missing. I think a Cat 1 would do some damage, but not major damage.

I was in Cat 1 Katrina...

One thing I learned was that "minor hurricane" is an oxymoron.

If they could move this giant pump into New Orleans they could empty that basin in a New York minute.

This thing has the potential to flood the whole coastline if it doesn't decide a direction soon.

LOL! and understood, and glad you made it out safe! "Katrina" turned out to be the "STORM TO GO OFF OF AND MEASURE BY, "`till you hear different"!..." A monster storm hit these folks here. Amazing, what this storm did. The damage in Mississippi is beyond beleif... My brother use to live on the coast, lost everything he owned... Sad indeed... My Dad still has NO lights and NO phone, after 11 days, and he lives 120 miles north of the coast. and nobody seems to give a s*it about them folks down there... If anyone here can help, PLEASE DO!

I shudder to think how the Gov. will respond after something else big goes down, here in the good `ol U.S.A.
What happened was shameful, from the top on down....

It doesn't know where it's going or when it'll get there, but it's certain to do damage on the way. Must be a Democrat.

I was in Wilmington in 1984 when Diana hit, but I was at UNCW and there really was not much damage. The Hurricane actually struck twice, it hit, went out to sea, hit again.
