Chaplain’s Corner – September 11 2005

The Following Testimony is from Mr. Paul Brady:
He is one of our 9-11 Survivors!

I would be honored to bear witness to God's Mercy and Love as an entry on the Pentagon Chaplain's Web Site per your offer. Respectfully, Paul

I feel like the "Ancient Mariner" in Coleridge's poem but I want to share my account of God's mercy, love and providence on that second "Day of Infamy" in our country's history. I have been describing the situation surrounding my escape from death from 9-11-01 and believe that my witness of Faith in Our Lord and devotion to Our Holy Mother Mary from my childhood to life in the Navy as a not-always faithful but devoted Irish Catholic were primary to my survival on that Second Day of Infamy. I stayed close to Our Lord and Our Blessed Mother in my devotion to Her and to the Rosary and had worn the Miraculous Medal for several years preceding 9-11. On that terrifying morning, in total blackness and stifling smoke, I realized that I would die unless I could escape from the Command Center in a few minutes. So in an act of faith, I called out to the Lord to delivery me from death. Since 9-11, my priorities in life have changed completely, I pray the Rosary with an intensity that I had never known before, and have developed a childlike devotion and trust in Divine Providence and the power of prayer. I firmly believe that the Lord spared my life on 9-11 and that He and Our Mother have a mission for me to perform. I am not sure what it is but as a good sailor, I am standing by to await orders.

In remembrance of all of our shipmates, co-workers and loved ones as well as all the other victims of the 11 September attack , our comrades who have died for us in the war against terrorism and for all those who still suffer from injuries of body, mind and spirit from that awful day. I have included the account of my escape from death in the command center by a miracle in answer to prayer. Please feel free to readdress this package to anyone who would be helped or strengthened in their faith by it. " Sincerely, Paul B.

The good Lord, St Michael and our guardian angels saved us from almost certain death or serious injury when the terrorist attack occurred to the Pentagon. Our counter drug office was in the same vault area as the new Navy Command Center (1D471) in the Pentagon renewal wedge area and was at the extreme corner away from the impact area, next to the C ring. On that terrible morning, we had watched in horror as the airliners hit the WTC towers. I had gone into Jerry Henson's office to drop off some papers and saw for the nth time the second plane hitting the North Tower. I remarked to Jerry and Jack Punches "Well, I guess that we will be the next on their target list." I then went around the corner to my work station, which was against the outside wall of the D ring. I had been there a couple of minutes when the explosion came. It sounded like an 8" shell detonating behind me. The shock wave pushed Trip Lloyd and me to the floor between our seats and work stations.. The air was filled with acrid choking smoke, dust and the fiber glass tiles from the overhead. The lights went out and the water sprinklers cut on from the overhead. The place was in complete darkness, since there is no external light into the command center area and the alternate power generator was outside the E-ring, next to the helo pad and was destroyed by the 757. (There were no battery powered battle lanterns in the command center like we have on ships to provide lighting below decks.) I realized that we had been hit by the terrorists but I thought it was a truck bomb that had been smuggled into the alleyway around our ring of the building. As soon as the debris quit flying, I stood up to see what was left. Of course it was complete blackness around. (The choking acrid smoke, the chaos and the total blackness must resemble the entrance to hell.) I had heard nothing, no cries or screams except for one scream behind our work stations back in the Navy Command Center when the explosion occurred... I was afraid of fire and/or a second blast, so I called out to Our Lord "Good Lord, please get me out of this place”. I turned my head toward Trip's work station to see if he were alive and how we could get out together. There, wonder of wonders, was a glimmer of light shining through the smoke and dust where his work station had been. I immediately dropped to the deck and crawled over the rubble (staying below the smoke line) to the light. Before me was a 4 by 4 hole in the foot and half thick solid masonry wall. I bent over and walked through it to the alleyway. Trip was already through the hole, and gave me a hand in climbing over the masonry rubble and push carts that had been left by the contractors. I saw no aircraft wreckage. We made our way through the alleyway and the corridor to the Central Courtyard/ground zero. Looking back we could see two enormous columns of black smoke rolling up from the Southwest Corner of the Pentagon. Fearing a follow-on attack, I said to Trip: Let's get out of here" He said "I am with you". We went out to South parking, where my car was parked (I had driven in the car pool that week.) I reached in my trousers pocket for my keys (which I normally drop in my jacket pocket in the morning after locking my car). The keys were there, we left and headed south on 395. I dropped Trip off near his home and got home myself, opened the door and answered the phone from my son (a Navy Civil Engineer) calling from San Diego. I had minor cuts and bruises, sore ribs and pulled muscles, but no serious injuries. My lungs were not injured and the Good Lord and Our Blessed Mother really protected us. Of the 34 people (including our CD personnel) 9 escaped (2 with serious injuries)... Jerry was pinned under a book case and metal beam in his office, had cuts on his face and serious smoke inhalation. Jack Punches was in the main part of the Navy Command Center when the plane hit and exploded. The Good Lord was really looking after us that day... (I later learned that the cockpit area of the 757 and body parts were hanging in the overhead over Jerry's office. Also there was a large aircraft wheel in the passageway near Jerry's office. When the Arlington County firemen came to fight the fire in the Command Center, they entered our space via the hole through which we had escaped and had to fight the fire in the immediate area before they could work their way into the Command Center. So it was a close call. There is no way that the hole would have been punched out of the foot and half thick masonry wall by the shock wave from the blast. A friend of mine who is a Navy Civil Engineer said that it would have taken a beam directed overpressure of several thousand PSI to have punched out a four by four foot hole in a foot and half thick limestone masonry wall. That overpressure would have completely crushed us. Also people in the Command Center located only a few feet away from us and separated from our space by light-weight room dividers were killed by the blast and fireball.

I have always been a person of deep faith, and this incident has deepened my trust and love for the Lord. My total outlook on life has changed. I fully realize what really matters in life, that our lives were spared in God's Providence, and that God will reveal what He has planned for us. I thank all of you for your prayers and calls regarding my safety and survival after that second Day of Infamy in American History. I keep all of you in my prayers that none of us will ever again experience the horrors of 11 September. I can relate to the sailors trapped in the sunken ships in "Battleship Row" in Pearl Harbor on that First Day of Infamy.

I was down on the Cuban Blockade in '62 and in the Med in '61 when the Berlin Wall was being built and our forces were gun barrel to gun barrel with Soviet tanks. Nothing happened on those two occasions and we returned home safely at the end of the operations. But when one is 66 years old and at a desk in the Pentagon, one does not expect a high-jacked airliner to blast into the Command Center.

Twenty Third Psalm

The Lord is my shepherd: I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green Pastures,
he leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of
righteousness for his name's sake,

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil: for thou art with me, thy rod and staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine
enemies: thou anointed my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my
life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Sing To The Lord

Read:
Psalm 30

Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. —Psalm 30:5

Bible In One Year: Ezekiel 1-3

cover It's as though a sinister stranger comes knocking on your door. You must let him in, for he knocks insistently and will not go away. He is sorrow personified.

You believe no one sees your tears and you feel all alone—but God sees them and He understands. "All night I make my bed swim; I drench my couch with my tears," David said in Psalm 6. "The Lord has heard the voice of my weeping" (vv.6,8). "You number my wanderings; put my tears into Your bottle; are they not in Your book?" (56:8). Though "weeping may endure for a night," it is a transient houseguest, for "joy comes in the morning" (30:5).

We remember, as David did, that God's love and favor last for a lifetime. He has promised never to leave us nor forsake us. When God's love comes into our thoughts, our feelings of sorrow and dread flee. Our mourning is turned into dancing, our garments of sackcloth and sorrow are stripped away and we are girded with gladness. We can rise to greet the day with shouts of ringing praise for His mercy, guidance, and protection. We rejoice in His holy name (30:11-12).

No matter our circumstances, let's sing to the Lord once again! —David Roper

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing,
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise. —Robinson

Praise is the voice of a soul set free.
