Also I have no idea how the beaches faired over around Emerald Isle, they aren't letting anyone on the Island this morning as far as I know

If either of you find out anything about the Emerald Isle/Atlantic Beach area, could you please let me know? I spent my summers growing up on Emerald Isle and it holds a very special place in my heart. I plan on eventually moving there. Thanks.

I heard late last night that Newport was getting pounded, but nothing today. All the power and phone lines are out though. :-(

Slideshow here: (on the top right side, sort of)

http://www.wral.com/index.html

jmc, heard a little about Emerald Isle, local flooding, some restaurants at Salter Path damaged -- ones on the sound side.

Pier at Sheraton (near old Ironsteamer Pier) gone.

Lots of water, but not a whole lot of damage, but they haven't gotten in there yet.

EMERALD ISLE IS OPEN TO ALL PERSONS

Emerald Isle, and all of the towns on Bogue Banks, are now open to all persons. No re-entry passes are required, and the public is free to travel as they please.

POWER BEING RESTORED SLOWLY

Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative crews are working diligently to restore power to our area at this time. Some areas of Town already have power restored, and other areas are expected to come back on throughout the day. We are not certain at this time as to how long it will take to fully restore power to all Emerald Isle homes and businesses.

Residents and property owners are urged to exercise extreme caution around downed power lines, and to be patient as we all await the restoration of power.

SOUNDSIDE AREAS HARDEST HIT BY OPHELIA IN EMERALD ISLE

The most significant damage in Emerald Isle occurred as a result of soundside flooding during Ophelia. All low-lying areas on Bogue Sound and near Bogue Inlet were affected, and the ground floor of many homes had as much as 4-5 feet of water in them at the peak of flooding. This flooding was caused by the high winds pushing water out of the sound and due to the storm surge, and has completely subsided.

The Island Harbor Marina’s docking facilities have been completely destroyed. The vast, vast majority of soundside private piers have also suffered significant damage.

I've never been suspended, and never had a thread pulled (that I recall).

Not to say that's impossible, but it hasn't happened yet.

Thanks to both of you for the updates. As selfish as it is, I am relieved to see that it was the soundside that was hit as opposed to the oceanfront, as that is the area I know and love and would like to purchase property on. Have either of you been to Emerald Isle? It's a wonderful little town that IMO has the perfect balance of tourist attractions and seclusion.

Bob DeBardelaben

Bob DeBardelaben...wow! That's a name from the past for sure. I haven't heard his name mentioned in years.

I've been going to Emerald Isle since I was young; when we first started, you had to drive on the beach to get to Salter Path and to get to Emerald Isle, you had to take a ferry.

We were just there in May.

Update: My cottage in Atlantic Beach, 2nd row, sustained slight shingle loss and section of siding gone along with some water damage to carpet from H2O blowing in through window. WHERE IS MY DEBIT CARD DAGNABIT!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, pretty lucky. Just got power on. There is some extensive flooding to some homes and some businesses heavily damaged. Anchorage Marina lost alot of dockage. One strip mall's roof was taken off. Another marina (stack by forklift) had heavy siding loss.

But could have been worse

Actually, Bob's promo actually went like this:

"Bob Debardelaben . . . the longest name in weather."

I kid you not.

Glad your damage was not worse. Can you find out if the restaurant on the Bridge - The Channel Marker - survived? It was reported flooded - but it has been flooded before. I just wanted to know if it was still standing since the Crab Shack down at Salter Path was basically destroyed.

CNN showed an interview with the brothers who own the Crabshack - at its location - and basically it iw destroyed - well the part of it on the land is still standing but the part of it over the water is gone. But the one brother said they planned to rebuild. It was so interesting listening to his accent - he is a real "Hoigh Toider" - speaking with the Outer Banks accent and phrasing. I didn't know those brothers but ate at the Crabshack many times. I've been going to Emerald Isle, Salter Path, and Atlantic Beach my entire adult life.

What a small world! Where do you stay when there? When I was really young, we would RV at the Holiday Travel Park, but most years we got a condo at Pebble Bach on Coast Guard Rd.

I could go on for hours about my times down there, from eating at T&W Oyster Bar, Rucker John's, and Famous Pizza, to fishing off the Bogue Inlet Pier, to chasing girls around at TJ's (the arcade right next to the pier).

It's been 4 years since I've been there, but I'm definitely spending at least a week there next spring/summer.
