My point exactly! At this point they could all be rescued. How come the newsman who saw that little grease covered dog did not rescue him? I would have.

Now why would they be put down in a shelter? They are peoples' pets and they should be reunited with their owners! That sheriff could rescue the animals and let the owners have a chance to reunite with them. Who made him judge and jury over this?

Why can't they get them out of there? If they can see them, they should be able to rescue them. The Navy guys are doing it.

I, for one, am against killing period! (Well, except in cases of self-defense, war, and the death penalty in certain cases.) These animals need to be given a chance to be reunited with their owners. Maybe the ones not claimed will be adopted by people who have lost their pets. The point is, they can't be adopted if they are shot on the spot!

You are seeing no more than what is within a TV cameras range. It is sad and I feel for the pets, but I have to accept the brutal facts.

I can remember no time that there were dogs or cats for me, not for pets, but as family members. As I type this I can look over and see two wired haired fox terriers with a feisty yorkie teasing one of them. So I know it is heart breaking, but in a disaster such as this, priorities have to be set, and loose dogs and cats rate right near the bottom

This squares with what I heard first hand from a man who managed to evacuate with his six dogs. The NOPD tried to get him to abandon his dogs -- one of which was a retired police K9. He waited eight days rather than abandon his dogs.

The 82nd Airborne evacuted him and his dogs from his home. He and the dogs were then flown out of New Orleans.

If you can get close enough to a stranded and starving dog to take a clean shot, why can't you try and rescue it?

I say, sure, give rescue a try. But in the end, if the choice is to let a starving, ill dog walk away suffering, then pull the trigger. It's what men must do.

While the boats are going around empty, why can't they pick up the cats and dogs and other animals? That does not mean that they can't save people, too. Of course human life is a top priority, but animals are living creatures, too. There are people on the scene who are willing to rescue the animals. Why should they not be allowed to do so?

Since the Navy is helping to rescue animals, I salute you! I am not biting my lip. I think that sheriff is a very cruel person.

And, in addition, many if not most of those "loose dogs and cats" are someone else's "family."

" But in the end, if the choice is to let a starving, ill dog walk away suffering, then pull the trigger. It's what men must do."

If the dogs were snarling, out of control pits or some poor dog stuck someplace where rescue would be impossible for days or even weeks and they would just die an agonizing death- I agree.
However, if you watch the video-these were tail wagging, every day pets-high and dry on sidewalks.
Sgt Minke Minton of the St Bernard's Parish Sheriff's dept remains a lazy POS.
He's no real man.
And maybe someday I can tell him that, to his face.

I think that sheriff is a very cruel person.

I don't think he's going to be able to sheriff anywhere again, if that gets out. He is more than an ass, but what can you say? If a man is happy to kill the innocent, what in God's name would he do to the guilty?

I shudder to think of what he would do to his prisoners.

What also makes me mad is they let the prisoners go free, but they did not evacuate the people in the projects.

Now they are killing innocent animals.

I have not heard of anyone else. I thought that his staff would be doing the same thing as he, but I have not heard of it.
