And why would they need cash except for drugs or alcohol, even guns off the street..

They should have made the debit cards so that the 2k had to be used for housing, food, or clothing.

The government made a huge mistake in giving money to the families of the 911 victims.

The 911 families extorted the money from the taxpayers, in order to keep the families from bankrupting the airlines. They make me sick.

You are right todays "victims" many of their own design, want aboard the same gravy train.

I am not donating any more as I all ready gave at the IRS.

'Fraid you're right.

I have seen reports where some of the rescued are looking at the silver lining -- they hope to use whatever help they get to make a new life for themselves, where they may have come from far more dire circumstances in NO or elsewhere. I pray this is true for more than a few.

I'm far from heartless. I'm actually very generous, and gave very generously after 9/11...but when stories of the behavior of those who stayed in N.O. started hitting the news (and all the "blame Bush" stuff began), I just lost my will to go out of my way to help.

Please rethink this. For every fool and looter we see on tv there are literally a thousand, good honest decent people who have been devastated. I suggest picking a place to donate very carefully, one that you can be sure will make the most of your gift. I'm going with the Salvation Army at this point.

Thanks so much for your uplifting post -- I am afraid that I, for one, have bought into some of this depressing media hype about the ungrateful rescued. Your experience is heartening. Do these folks want to go back to their homes? Are they interested in relocating for good and working in TX? Just curious

I swear to God, if they get anywhere near that amount, I'm playing Atlas Shrugged and will just quit working and paying taxes myself.

I know there are. I'm just so soured on it all, from the mayor up and down the chain. It's very hard to give when you're guaranteed a kick in the teeth in return...but I will pray about it.

---"Y'all are buying into a lie."---

Just like with the looters. Some reporter was talking to an older guy down in Mississippi. 59 yrs old, herniated disc and bad knee. Had $600 in the bank. Was cleaning out all the wet and muddy junk in his home. The reporter asked him if he was angry. The guy said "Angry? Now's not the time to be angry. Now's the time to get to work and get on with it. The Lord will provide."

I have to disagree. For once the Feds are trying to foster a little personal responsibility. If he blows his 2 k on crap, well TS, he can go cry to Jesse Jackson.

What a WONDERFUL STORY!
I wish you would start a NEW THREAD about it!
I would really like to see some more coverage of the "good" stories..
But, since this is unlikely to happen...we will have to rely on good people like you to pass this NEWS along!

God Bless you for volunteering..

Might be a good time to start thinking of retirement. Get down into a much lower tax bracket.

We can agree to disagree. ;)

The Feds should have been smarter and made it mandatory that this money was used for its intended purpose. To get people back on their feet.

"Yep - I really hope someone was taping this segment and is able to make it available as a clip. That guy could be the poster child of entitlement mentality."

I have the whole segment on videotape. I taped it when he used the "F" word the first time saying, "excuse my French", and when he used it the second time after being invited back in front of the camera to tell people exactly what it is that he wants or needs. He didn't apologize for his "French" the second time, when he said he wants what the F*ck he deserves - $20,000.00.

No doubt Rush and Hannity will make good use of that clip.

Now is not the time as we are too busy taking care of people, but you are going to hear some stories that will reduce you to tears and others will curl your hair. This is a very difficult situation for many and we're doing our best to fix it.

My pastor, Dr. Ed Young, spoke on volunteering and donating money to the effort last Sunday. His exact words were:

" I don't want to hear how you love people. Either put up or shut up".

And we're putting up.

Saw somewhere that now the money is being direct-deposited into people's accounts. No more debit cards. Maybe that will cut down on some of the nonsense.

Many of them are going to be staying in Texas and they are welcome here. Many good people in NO stayed there only because they had family in town. For many families, they are all now here and they have decided to stay.

Texas is apparently 180 degrees from NO and they are just getting a taste of it.

He looked healthy; let him join the military and give back for once.

I hope the military recruiters are down there. The armed services offer the best chance for some of these folks to turn their lives around.

Even if their lives aren't turned around I'd love to see the guy who dropped the F-bomb learn about life from a drill instructor.

They should have had this guy on the telethon last night so he express his desire for more money.

That measly $2000 hardly bought anything at all at the Louis Vuitton store

I heard Tony Snow mention Louis Vuitton briefly, but haven't heard an entire account. Please tell me that people w/o a pot to pee in didn't go spend money on LV purses???
