'BIMBO' BLONDES BLOWN OUT
Sky News ^ | 9/5/2005 | Sky News

Gentlemen apparently no longer prefer blondes.

Instead, they would rather choose the brains and sophistication more often associated with brunettes.

That is according to a study into hair colour and the intensity of attraction, which showed 51% of men thought brunettes were more attractive.

Researchers at City University showed 1,500 men three pictures of the same model digitally enhanced as a blonde, a brunette and a redhead.

They were then asked to give their impressions of the model's personality based on her hair colour.

Brunettes were described as intelligent by 81%, while 67% described them as independent and self-sufficient.

Two-thirds of the men (62%) said the brunette women appeared stable and competent.

The blonde model was described as needy and lacking in independence by four out of ten.

Redheads were thought to be intelligent by 79% of the men, although 45% described them as neurotic.

City University Professor of Psychology Peter Ayton led the research commissioned by hair products company Sunsilk.

He said blonde hair had historically been seen as a symbol of youth which was attractive to men, but added: "As the role of women has evolved, men's expectations of women have changed.

"They're looking for more intense, equal partnerships and appearance has a large role to play."

"A few years ago I saw a TV special where men voted for the most beautiful women of all time. Only one blue-eyed blonde (Marilyn Monroe) made the list. The others were all brown-eyed brunettes. I can't remember all the winners now, but Raquel Welch and Sophia Loren were among them."

The answer is Sophia Loren. It doesn't matter what the special said.

And for the men who haven't seen her face, her it is:

A lot of women follow trends. Once the trend starts it doesn't matter what started it, or whether it makes any sense. (Just look it all the pudgy women wearing low-rise pants and cut-off tops, for example.)

Men follow trends, too, of course, but the vast majority of hair-color products are sold to women.

You got it. This is typical of academic researchers. The good professor is missing a critical step in his conclusions. His finding is that men find brunettes to be more "independent and sophisticated." But that does NOT mean that men WANT brunettes over blonds.

Hellooo. Having been a guy most of my life, and knowing a few other guys, I can vouch for the fact that most of them (not me, of course) prefer AVAILABILITY in a woman, rather than SOPHISTICATION. Helloooo. Methinks the professor has been in the lab sniffing the chemicals for too long.

Redheads ... 45% described them as neurotic

That's gotta hurt ...

Doesn't matter.

They are worth it.

Hey, wait a minute! Some blondes are natural blondes, including me. Helps me fly beneath the radar when folks think I'm stupid 'cuz I'm blond. LOL.

I'm still partial to blondes but I think the answer to why brunettes fare well in this survey is because the white population is declining compared to asian, black and Hispanic populations (all naturally dark-haired). This means more dark-skinned dark-haired men who may not see blondes as naturally attractive.

When I start seeing brunettes with blonde roots, I'll start believing brunettes are actually more popular. Doesn't seem women themselves supporting this notion.
