'BIMBO' BLONDES BLOWN OUT
Sky News ^ | 9/5/2005 | Sky News

Gentlemen apparently no longer prefer blondes.

Instead, they would rather choose the brains and sophistication more often associated with brunettes.

That is according to a study into hair colour and the intensity of attraction, which showed 51% of men thought brunettes were more attractive.

Researchers at City University showed 1,500 men three pictures of the same model digitally enhanced as a blonde, a brunette and a redhead.

They were then asked to give their impressions of the model's personality based on her hair colour.

Brunettes were described as intelligent by 81%, while 67% described them as independent and self-sufficient.

Two-thirds of the men (62%) said the brunette women appeared stable and competent.

The blonde model was described as needy and lacking in independence by four out of ten.

Redheads were thought to be intelligent by 79% of the men, although 45% described them as neurotic.

City University Professor of Psychology Peter Ayton led the research commissioned by hair products company Sunsilk.

He said blonde hair had historically been seen as a symbol of youth which was attractive to men, but added: "As the role of women has evolved, men's expectations of women have changed.

"They're looking for more intense, equal partnerships and appearance has a large role to play."

In my younger days a heartbeat and respiration were the only things that mattered. If I was single now, any sign of being a shrill lib is all it would take to scare me away.

I've always preferred brunettes and redheads over blondes. Most blondes are a faux blondes upon closer examination. Women are attracted to power, money, and ssecurity.

Personally, I like women - hair color isn't an issue. The issue is getting them to like me. Eharmony gave me a three month subscribtion for the price of one - I think they did it for the entertainment value. Go there once a day to have it tell me that it can't find a match for me. Personally, I can't tell if it's an insult or a compliment.

When I was growing up, blondes were very much glorified as the ideal. I was bummed as a little girl and wished I was a blonde. But personal experience seems to show that men really do prefer brunettes.

A few years ago I saw a TV special where men voted for the most beautiful women of all time. Only one blue-eyed blonde (Marilyn Monroe) made the list. The others were all brown-eyed brunettes. I can't remember all the winners now, but Raquel Welch and Sophia Loren were among them.

Bob, maybe your profile (if that's what they use) needs a bit of tweaking. Did you mention that you retired at 35?

Surveys like this are heavily skewered against blonds because so many of the trashiest and "needy and lacking in independence" brunettes bleach their hair giving blonds a bad name. There's a huge difference between a blond and a trashy brunette with bleached hair.

I like you. In college at Texas A&M, I was a very blond and slim. I would go to parties and bars and pretend I was an elementary education major. All the guys thought I was serious. When I actually told them my major, they couldn't believe it. At first, I was a chemical engineering major and then I switched to computer science.

I had one guy that told me that I was too cute to be a chemical engineering major.

After college I moved to California, and I met my husban. I don't think he married me because I was cute or smart. He married me because I was conservative. There's not a lot of conservative women in these parts.

I've heard it said that men like women with a past while women like men with a future.

Don't know that Nancy Pelosi belongs on that. There's something oddly appealing about a gal whose "work" keeps her from closing her eyes.

Beautiful women come in all hair colors.

I do prefer light brown to blond hair. Can't stand bleached blondes.
