Some in the black community are beginning to question what happened to the black leadership during the Hurricane Katrina disaster, especially in the city of New Orleans.
While a few black leaders, including the Rev. Jesse Jackson, the Rev. Al Sharpton and the Congressional Black Caucus, have singled out the president for blame, others say Mayor C. Ray Nagin, who is black, is responsible for the dismal response to the flooding that stranded thousands in the city's poorest sections.

And from the start the MSM would be blaming failures of government at all levels.

I was in lower NYC and saw what happened on 9/11. Terrible things that they won't show on TV. I was depressed and couldn't believe what I saw for months. When I accepted what happened, my anger was directed to the wrong people and I sided with the RATS.
FR reformed me with help from Rush and Mark Levin. I slowly admitted my problem and weaned myself off DU and Air-head America. Unfortunately I only started lurking here after the election.
Now I know that RATS are the party of users. They prey on the weak and vulnerable to get votes. It is like a cult.

Well maybe they will see the truth. I am sick and damn tired of this race card. If Clinton was in office this would not be a problem. He would be made a hero.

How can you and I know with any certainty the number of buses?
If it was 1,5,or 5,000 it makes no difference.
The so-called MSM will say whatever they want to say.
So what? Why do they matter?

A little history is in order. Notice there is no mention of FEMA or anything to do with the Federal Government. As of this press conference there was no plan to use the Superdome as a refuge of last resort for the general population of the City of New Orleans as the press release clearly states. The release does not include a time when the press release occurred. I did a search and did not find this release posted at FR.

Mayor Nagin Urges Citizens to Prepare For Hurricane Katrina
(New Orleans, LA) In response to the potential threat of Hurricane Katrina, Mayor C. Ray Nagin is urging all citizens to begin preparations now for the coming storm. Mayor Nagin will hold the next press briefing at 5 p.m. today in the Mayors Press Room, second floor of City Hall.
Although the track could change, forecasters believe Hurricane Katrina will affect New Orleans, said Mayor Nagin. We may call for a voluntary evacuation later this afternoon or tomorrow morning to coincide with the instatement of contraflow. This will give people more options to leave the area. However, citizens need to begin preparing now so they will be ready to leave when necessary. Do everything to prepare for a regular hurricane, but treat this one differently because it is headed our way. This is not a test.
The Mayor also recommended that residents of Algiers, the Lower Ninth Ward and low-lying areas begin evacuating now.
Gov. Blanco also urged citizens to take the storm seriously. We can restore property, but we cannot restore lives, she said.
Mayor Nagin is working with Gov. Kathleen Blanco and other City, local and State officials are watching the storms path and working together to make decisions that affect citizens. Gov. Blanco has declared a state of emergency in Louisiana, which provides city government with additional authority and improved access to resources needed when responding to elevated threats, such as natural disasters.
A state of emergency has been declared for the City of New Orleans. Citizens are advised to:
Fill their cars with gas. Tolls have been suspended on roadways.
Remove potential debris from their yards (including lawn furniture, potted plants, loose tree branches, etc.)
Board windows and glass doors
Make sure that nearby catch basins are clear of leaves or trash
Stock up on bottled water, batteries, and non-perishable food items
Check on family, friends and neighbors, especially the elderly, to make sure everyone has an evacuation plan
Make provisions for pets. Shelters and many hotels do not accept pets.
-MORE-
The key is being prepared for the event, said Mayor Nagin. Were doing everything we can to make sure our city is safe.
Shelters for Citizens with Special Medical Needs
There are two shelters for people with special medical needs open in the state. Citizens should call prior to going to the shelters. The shelter in Alexandria can be reached at (800) 841-5778; the number for Monroes shelter is (866) 280-7287. If it becomes necessary, other shelters will be opened in various cities. The Superdome will be opened as a refuge of last resort for special needs patients if it becomes necessary. All individuals may have one caretaker.
Anyone planning to spend time in a shelter should bring three to four days worth of food, sleeping gear, and medical supplies including oxygen, medicine and batteries for any necessary devices. No weapons or bulky items are allowed in any shelters.
New Orleans EMS is responding to medical emergencies only. For non-emergency transportation needs, citizens should contact local non-emergency ambulance providers:
Acadian: (504) 366-0911
Lifeguard: (504) 214-1911
Guardian: (504) 818-2600
A-Med: (504) 362-9490
Care: (504) 367-4231
On-Call: (504) 866-0481
Closings
New Orleans Public Schools will be closed Monday, August 29, 2005. All NOPS activities scheduled for this weekend have been cancelled.
New Orleans Public Libraries will close at 3 p.m. today, Saturday, August 27, 2005, and remain closed through Monday, August 29, 2005.
The City of New Orleans will be issuing additional advisories as the storm progresses. Citizens are asked to remain alert, monitor news stories and be prepared to respond promptly to any public safety advisories.

If the order had been given early enough, and the state had a real evac plan to take folk 30 to 60 miles north...to high school gyms with cops on hand...and simply ran buses constantly for 48 hours...then everyone in town would have left either by bus or their private car. THERE WAS NO PLAN. We must accept the fact now that this one town, and one state...were totally unprepared for such a event. You can blame folks going back 40 years for never taking this serious.

Well over 500 busses were avail, the kid who took it upon himself, got over 70 to Houston in one school buss. If the idiot mayor had acted accordingly early, he could have shuttled them out and returned for many more.

Two thousand buss number comes not from fish bowl city proper, but within greater NO metropolitan area, all surrounding parrishs et al. Gov Blanco commandeered every buss in LA once the warm brown matter hit the rotating blades.
Stitch in time saves nine, Nagin said kiss mine. I ain't gonna act like a leader and get things going several days early just because a possible cat 5 storm has NO in the cross hairs.

"The hurting is about to begin. The Democrat response of circling the wagons around their guilty parties is going to lose them a lot of support.
Time for the GOP to swoop in and fix things and maybe even win them over."
This is exactly why the White House is letting this roll without answering every elected and unelected lefty's insane accusations. The truth on what Nagin and Blanco did not do (we all know most of it by now but it keeps coming in daily) and what they did do (blame, blame, blame) is just like those flood waters meeting the levy - with so much pressure something has to give.
The WH now has many prominent Dems (not to mention Sharpton, Jackson, Penn, West, Brosnan yada yada yada) on the record and can now step-up rhetoric highlighting the on-going struggle between DC and the inept/corrupt LA officials. No need to rush. Do it slowly and concisely so it doesn't look like they are beating up - let the LA/NO pols do it for you.
The history of LA and especially NO corruption for over 70 years is going to be known. When the last ten years of NO corruption are disseminated then the last act of this play will be: The Welfare State Wears No Clothes.
The End.

Gov Blanco commandeered every buss in LA once the warm brown matter hit the rotating blades. Thanks for the clarification. That number makes sense now, but it was not the number sitting axel deep in salt water as the Washington Times article stated. With that number of busses, most of the population could be evacuated in 24 hours assuming some would make more than one round trip.

"I think that number is too high. That would mean that 100,000 people could be evacuated in one trip. The estimates I've seen was that there were 200-400 buses that were drowned."
I agree, that number does sound high. I'd guess from the photos I've seen that there were at least 400 school and city buses that could have been used. If you pack them up they could probably fit 80 each which would be about 32000 people - easily more than enough to take care of everyone at the Superdome.
