SACRAMENTO Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is expected to announce next week he is running for re-election, sources said Thursday, as Democratic lawmakers continued passing bills that the governor plans to veto.
Ignoring legislators' scramble to wrap up their 2005 session today, Schwarzenegger traveled to GOP-friendly Fresno on Thursday as he continued campaigning for his Nov. 8 special election to revamp state government.
In the Legislature, bills addressing key issues to the public such as a multibillion-dollar transportation bond remained shelved until next year at the earliest.
The developments came in the wake of polls that show Californians aren't very happy with any of the state's politicians or their actions these days.
The disclosure that Schwarzenegger is imminently planning to make public his run for governor next year, after capturing the office two years ago in an unprecedented recall election, came from sources close to Schwarzenegger after a Washington, D.C., newspaper report.
"He'll announce sometime between today and the convention next weekend," a GOP official told the Roll Call.
Prominent Republicans expect Schwarzenegger to make the announcement sometime before next Friday, the opening day of the state GOP's annual fall convention. But he faces stiff competition from the leading Democratic candidates state Treasurer Phil Angelides and Controller Steve Westly.
Schwarzenegger's strategists hope the declaration will boost weak public support for the governor and his special election initiatives, which would alter government spending, make it harder for teachers to gain tenure and immediately overhaul political boundary redistricting to break Democrats' control.

AS..has his shortcomings..but he is still way ahead
of the tax and spend Democrats who have very little
to offer. The money being spent by the Teachers
Union is an all out effort is to defeat Arnold...and
then they turn around and clamor for more money as
they continue their top heavy, agenda....of the lazy
tenured teachers who all vote Democrat..no matter
what..why? Increase the taxes, as out schools are
broke???? PS: Another main goal...Kill Prop. 13...
as the beneficiaries of tax reduction are the ones
voting Republican...Jake
Hagel was good until he caught "Presidential Fever". Even so, he has ALWAYS voted with the President. Can your Senators say the same?
Candidates Vote Vote %
Republican Schwarzenegger 3,744,132 49%
Democrat Bustamante 2,434,484 32%
Republican McClintock 1,026,704 13%
These are the results. No apologies. Suppoting someone who only got 13% of the vote is a sure way to lose. Just like California Republicans do.
Newsflash: I support redistricting 100%. Since Arnold didn't campaign for any Republican challengers we will never know what effect it may have had and don't forget this was while he was still at the height of his popularity.
we do know where his don't make waves with the demonrats policy has gotten him.
God nforbid Lockyer should become Gov., but I would like to see Big A stop acting like a girlie-man and take off the gloves like he promised.
Unfortunately, more and more, Arnold's actions and omissions are indicating there isn't all that much difference between a RINO and Gray Davis.
A great many of us are going to have a very difficult time deciding if we want to--one more time--vote for the "least worst". Especially with so much doubt on the table as to whether Arnold is in fact the "least worst".
Fact of the matter is Arnold should have stayed out of the race and just let McClintock win!
What would the world be without dreamers. :-? LOL
Ahoy FRom Juneau..
:)
They love the miserable moderate/left of center Repellican to death and are praying he hasn't ruined his prospects to continue suffocating conservatism in CA Republican politics!!!
So hurry back from the Crapitol of Alaska, to the Crapitol of Cauleeforneeah as the manure movers job is never done within these state crapitols!!!
Make those slaves in the galley row harder! Beat the drum faster!! I wanna see a wake big enough to upset the Sierra Flub!!! (maybe you could even ski behind it)
Ok, if ya wanna stay stuck on stupid, I guess I can't stop ya... You're too determined for me to even care about!!! Phhhht!!!
Candidate | Votes | Pct. | Spent ($MM) |
Steve Westly | Moderate Democrat | 45.4 | $10.6 |
Tom McClintock | Conservative Republican | 45.1 | $2.0 |
Result? The conservative got no support from the GOP, was outspent 5:1 by a moderate Democrat, and nearly won anyway. |

Candidate | Votes | Vote Pct. | Spent ($MM) |
Cruz M. Bustamante | Leftist Democrat | 49.5 | $4.6 |
Bruce Mc Pherson | Moderate Republican | 41.8 | $2.8 |
Result? The moderate Republican darling of the GOP got lots of support, was outspent only 1.6:1 by an extreme leftist with no credibility, the "electable" GOP "moderate" LOST by a margin NINE TIMES larger than the unsupported conservative in the same election. So much for "moderates are more electable in California." |

Despite having the second lowest Republican registration of any senate Republican seat up for election this year, McClintock's campaign ran more than 19 points ahead of party registration - the largest margin of any senate Republican:
Candidate Party Votes Percent
* Tom McClintock Republican 226,225 61.0%
Paul Joseph Graber Democratic 144,800 39.0%
Here is the last USA Today/CNN/GALLUP poll before the recall.
"6. If the choice were between Cruz Bustamante, the Democrat and Tom McClintock, the Republican, who would you be more likely to vote for: Cruz Bustamante or Tom McClintock?"
September 25-27
Registered Voters
McClintock 49%
Bustamante 42%
Probable Voters
McClintock 56%
Bustamante 37%
So California won't vote conservative? Consider the spate of recent ballot propositions:
Prop 227 | English only education in public schools | Passed |
Prop 209 | No more affirmative action in State hiring or education | Passed |
Prop 22 | Heterosexual marriage only | Passed |
Prop 187 | No benefits for illegal aliens | Passed |
Simon lost to Davis by only 325,000 votes after the most incompetent campaign in history and while being stabbed in the back by his own Party.
The point is this: the argument that only a moderate can win in California is pure crap. The real problem is the the CAGOP leadership won't back conservative candidates. So for a conservative to back a moderate in favor of a conservative is to feed the game and preclude conservatives from holding office.
That means you.
Indisputable.
If this were any other state,
conservatives would be demanding, and getting, support for issues which so conveniently get swept under the rug in the name of 'progress' here in CA.
I fell for it completely, thinking California's different and unique and we must treat issues with kid gloves and settle for crumbs.
But no more. I'm hungry for substance and I don't care about charisma.
Too many GOP positions on issues such as regulation amount to no more than Democrat-lite, simply because they lack deep understanding of how free enterprise, private property, faith, charity, and the power of family really work. Worse, even if they do understand those principles, few have the courage to go after the disasters the Democrats have made.
As you know, I specialize in environmental issues. You would be shocked to see the degree of defeatism within the Republican Party on that front. IMO, it is in part because they secretly believe that regulation is a necessary evil and have no comprehension of the scope and depth of the environmental problems regulatory agencies have festered. Try to tell them that, lacking authority, and anything I say falls on deaf ears. It's maddening.
I have come to the conclusion that the only thing to do is to construct that authority, article by article, with video tours of my property if necessary. I would truly have preferred to have stayed a relatively anonymous teacher as I do not anticipate the impact upon my family with any relish. Time grows too short for that path any longer as the bricks of our prison build ever higher and Hillary looking like she'll get the keys to the gate unless something is done, and soon.
To everyone:
I try to learn from winners, not losers. When conservatives start winning in California, they will have something to teach others. Now, all they can do is teach how to lose. I look at results, not words. When you start winning, check back.
It's not easy to win on a platform of self-reliance in a state where dependence on anything but government is considered a sin.
Winning in CA is an individual demonstration.
When enough individuals demonstrate genuine success, it will resonate.
Fabulous post.
You're very brave.
It's one thing to post anonymously, but you've taken that step beyond to PROVE what works.
And bless your family for their support.
I'm still sticken my neck out, predictin that A.S. will pull out at the last second, further smashing a crippled CA GOP into the ground with no Gubernatorial candidate for the Primary!!! (wonder what the rationalizations will be for premature stratergery that was such high risk?)
Maria just said today that she's dying to git back into "journalism!" I think she hates Sacramento, aka "the Cow Town!"
Go for it, dude.
Stop listening to the paid political advisors and hacks, stand up for the little guy and do what you were sent to Sacto to do.
Get Prop. 77 passed and your second term will kick ass.
Then you won't have a problem telling us what wonderful state you're writing from.... since these facts will all check out.
