In New Orleans, martial law and poor communication lead to tense situation for one reporter
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | September 8, 2005 | Peter Fimrite

I did not actually count the number of automatic weapons pointed at me, but there were at least five, and I was certain they were all locked and loaded, or whatever that military phrase is signifying that a gun is ready to blow a hole in somebody.

"Step out!" commanded the black-helmeted man in the middle of what appeared to be a tactical formation. He was pointing a laser-like flashlight attached to his machine gun at me.

I must have been quite a sight alone out there on the darkened New Orleans street wearing a headlamp and holding a cell phone at an odd right angle, the only way I could get it to work. I had just been placed on hold.

"I'm a journalist working for The San Francisco Chronicle," I said quickly, trying to remain calm. "I'm out here because the signal ...."

"Step out here!" he interrupted, and his tone suggested that the consequences for not stepping out into the street would be dire. I stepped out.

The encounter was a sobering look into the post-hurricane reality of New Orleans. The city has been evacuated, and a 6 p.m. curfew imposed. The citizens who remain are presumed to be up to no good, especially if they are out past dark.

The abvolute worst reporter I've seen is Matt Frei with the BBC. I actually think he has severe mental problems that this crisis is bringing to the fore.

And of course being a "journalists" their mission to spread DNC propaganda was more important then doing a little thing like OBEYING THE LAW. Then they wonder why they almost get wasted?????

Reporters are expendable.

Especially drama queens like this guy who ignore curfews and argue with the police.

Journalists answer only to themselves.

Until, of course, they come up on a well-armed squad of soldiers who like to explain otherwise.

"I'm special, I'm a journalist!"

He can't claim ignorance of the situation because if he can get dispatches out, he can receive the news that he is to leave.

If he can't even understand the message "everybody out" how are we to believe ANYTHING he is reporting?

No. Curfew good, EXCEPT that he had a reason for disobeying it that was justified in his reporter-brain. That appears to be his reasoning, but I only read the excerpt at the top.

"It's just too dangerous."

And that fact has been under reported. The feral humans are well armed and will do most anything to lay claim on their turf.

Lets see what he reports when one of the "left behind" loonies slits his throat for his "innocent" cell phone.

While my opinion of reporters is generally low, we do need them there to keep an eye on the people who are running things (and people) in New Orleans.
And provided they behave themselves and stay indoors off the phone, they will probably be allowed to remain on the scene, reporting nothing significant. Mustn't let the people think anything significant happening there.
The amateur looting seems to be over, now. The professional looting has begun with the order to confiscate lawful weapons. Once that process is completed, we'll see what they aim to loot next. But gutting the Constitution, naturally, begins at the Second Amendment.
They are storming the gate, our Bill of Rights, two at a time, aren't they? Second Amendment, Fourth Amendment.

Ive heard that the "slit throat" is a trade mark of one of the lawless factions down there.

"That was totally unprofessional, pointing their guns at us like that," White complained when he returned. "The Army has been patrolling this street for a week, and they know what's going on here. All the police had to do was ask them, and they would have known everything they needed to know about this street."

Seems like this was more NOPD incompetence.

The guy should learn the first rule of responding to law enforcement, when they tell you to do something, do it without being mouthy.
