Happy Anniversary, Guys
Powerline ^ | September 09, 2005 | John Hinderaker

Today is September 9, the first anniversary of "Rathergate." It was at 7:51 on the morning of Sept. 9, 2004, that Scott hit the "save" button on the original version of "The Sixty-First Minute", which discussed the 60 Minutes program on President Bush's National Guard service that had aired the previous evening, along with the DNC's advertising campaign on the same subject that was beginning on the morning of Sept. 9. At the end of his post--now the most famous post in the young history of the blogosphere--Scott included a quote and a link to a Free Republic post by Buckhead which questioned the documents' authenticity.

Our readers quickly began to weigh in, and over the course of the day we updated "The Sixty-First Minute" fifteen or twenty times, then began a series of separate posts on the same subject. Many other bloggers, of course, were on the same trail; Charles Johnson and Bill at INDC were just two of the many who contributed in one way or another. Demonstrating the power of the medium, within twelve hours after Scott did his original post, Drudge reported that CBS News executives were meeting to discuss the crisis.

A year ago, PowerLine & LGF linked to FR - and I joined with a great group. Thank you Buckhead, FReepers and conservative blogs for pulling the curtain on Rather.

I suggest a presidential declaration: National Buckhead Day. Flags at CBS will be lowered to half-staff.

What Buckhead did with that famous post effectively finished off the credibility of the MSM once and for all. And you wonder why the vast majority of newspapers, TV networks and news magazines are falling on hard times....

In short, it was the ultimate triumph of what Alvin Toffler said back in 1979 when he wrote The Third Wave about the de-massification of the media.

If I didn't have young ones with soccer pratice tonight I'd grab the husband and head on down to Buckhead for a celebratory drink.

I'll have to make a toast to you from the confines of my house in Alpharetta.

Thanks for your work.

Buckhead, ya done good. Happy anniversary. I am sure that someday the screen name Buckhead will be discussed along with the pen names of pro-revolution pamphleteers, and with the monkier "Deep Throat."

I would like to note for the record that the first person to call "BS" on the memos was TankerKC, who pointed out early in the live thread that they didn't look anything like the format he'd seen thousands of times during his Air Force service in the same era. But of course, if not for Buckhead and Powerline, I'm not sure this would have gone as far as it did.
