Katrina evacuees - Man on the Scene
SpawnofEaker1 | 9/8/05 | SpawnofEaker1

Posted on 09/08/2005 6:35:18 PM PDT by SpawnofEaker1

Today was day 1 at the reliant Arena. I thought there was going to be a bad element there. Where I could trust no one. The people there were nicer than some people that live here. I was surprised when I saw kids with smiles on there faces just because of the free little teddy bear. When they have nothing else to play with. Most of my job is listening to peoples story's. Which was in some cases was difficult to do. I hope them having someone listening to there story makes there day a little better. The smallest thing could change these people's life's.

Day 2

I arrived at Reliant Center today at about 9 am. After I signed in with the company I am working with they sent us to the Astrodome for family reunification. On the way to the entrance I was expecting the usual pat down. When we got to the entrance the security told there were not letting anyone in without a volunteer armband. We then had to turn around and walk back to where we originally signed in and stand in line for said armband. It took us the better part of an hour to get the band and get into the dome. After finally getting to our designated work area it was my neighbor who had to train me because we were so short handed on account of the lock down. While we were working there was a rumor the President Bush was going to visit. While getting up to get some fresh air I noticed a lot of military personal around. I asked on of the soldiers why the Dome was one lockdown but he would not give me a straight answer.

The people there were nicer than some people that live here.

It's my opinion that folks are just that way at heart in the south.

I wish I could join you. Good work, son.

It was a few people who didn't understand that we all loved Brother Dixson.

They have been stepped on.

No problem assistant to the mouse murder.

Really it was more a property rights issue than a murder.
There were self-defense aspects in play as well but the property issue takes Federal precedence.

Pretty bold for a newbie -- posting on your first day on Free Republic. A vanity, no less!

Aw -- well, ya come from a good line. And you are doing a great thing. Put me on your ping list for this, please.

(Consider this the obligatory hassle about vantities and newbies that almost everyone gets. I mean, you don't want to be different?)

BTW. Thanks for helping those in need.

I can barely handle a trip by plane these days, due to all the lines and ID checks.

Wifey and I go to Minnesota (from southern California) fairly regularly...unless it's an emergency, we now drive...a whole lot more fun and relaxing; nothing like leisurely travelling 90 percent or so of Route 66.

Was this who showed up instead of Pres. Bush?

The mayor of hurricane ravaged New Orleans stopped by the Dallas Convention Center to see how Louisiana refugees are doing. The visit by Mayor Ray Nagin wasn't announced in advance to the media. A Dallas city spokesman says Nagin toured part of the center that provides medical care for the displaced people. Dallas Mayor Laura Miller accompanied Nagin on the medical tour. One Louisiana refugee says he did a double take to see the mayor.

What a disappointment...and when is Nagin going to stay in NO?
