"An Awful Howling" -- animals dying in New Orleans
Fox News | 9/8/05

Posted on 09/08/2005 2:19:14 PM PDT by pabianice

A Fox reporter in NO was asked on air what it was like now in New Orleans. She replied that aside from the horrible stink from sewage the air is full of the mournful cries of cats and dogs dying of thirst, hunger, and injuries as they stand on roof tops and drag themselves along the roadways. They don't know why they have been left to die. So sad.

Please... also give to animal rescue organizations! Thanks.

It's against the law to ABANDON your pets

There is no law, apparently. According to one looter, "If it were wrong, the police would be stopping us."

I've heard the rescuers are starting to get sick. It may be too late.

Perhaps we should strap some water battles to Kanye, give him a boat (with a drain plug in place) and send him out to make himself useful.

Then there would be another howling animal.

I'm really, really worried about what they have been exposed to and if we even now about all medical research going on in Nola - as well as substances that may have been released into the environment either through rising water or because of something a looter did.

Quote: The authorities should not waste a second rescuing pets until all the people were safe.

People can walk/swim out or or have sense of what's going on and get food. I saw one dog tied up and it was on top of a car with water all around.
I say do both rescues at the same time.

You and me both. I would have WALKED out prior to the hurricane. If you stay you lose your home, family and pets.

If you WALK out while you can...at least you are SOMEWHERE and STILL have your family and pets.

So, stay and lose everything.

Walk out, or get out however you can and get to someplace else. It's the same difference. You might be able to find a shelter at least until you could go to a church and ask for help. At least you are all together and in charge of your OWN destiny instead of depending on someone else to guide your life at that point when everything is destroyed.

That's true in a lot of cases. Absolutely.

The dog in your post #25 appears to be beefier than your dog in #71. I am only curious because my dad had a shepherd that was the most beautiful shep I had ever seen.

Its coloration was black and silver and he was BIG. I have never seen another like him until a couple years ago when in my local paper they featured a local dog trainer and his shep.

The dog could have been my dad's dog's litter mate. Anyway, I sent the trainer an email requesting info on the dog but the jerk never responded. Then last year about this time I was at a vegetable stand north of me when a gal showed up with a young shep the same coloration but smaller that was being trained to become a seeing eye dog.

After dad had put Zarek down I guess he threw away the papers that came with him because I have never been able to find them. I would love to have a shep myself but their hereditary hip dysplacia is too much to cope with after so few years with them.

spca.org in Texas is taking donations along with thousands of disaster animals. And the other good news, temporary solution is many people besides offering their homes or property to human survivors are foster caring for pets until their pet owners can locate and reclaim them.

I love animals, just about any kind of the 4-legged persuasion. Did anyone hear, as I did, the the initial airlift rescues would not allow evacues to bring pets? One small boy had his dog taken away from him and left behind. Imagine ...
