GULF COAST CRISIS: GUN PURCHASES Fearful Southerners buy firearms at torrid pace
Chicago Tribune ^ | September 8, 2005 | Lisa Anderson, Michael Martinez and Ray Quintanilla

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Gun sales across the South boomed after the first reports surfaced of armed looters roaming the streets of New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. And images of shots being fired at relief workers only elevated fears in some communities.

Now, as hundreds of thousands of people displaced from their homes are being resettled, gun store owners say they're being flooded by a demand for guns--particularly in Southern states and others where many of the hurricane victims are being relocated.

Mostly, they say, the demand is being fueled by "good people" wanting to protect their families and property. That includes some who might not otherwise purchase such weapons, they add.

Aw shucks.. :-) Thanks...but my kids make it EASY on me! ...and their lovely Mamma (my SweetiePie) had a LOT to do with it too!

I can only a very small, minute bit of credit. :-)

And it's really hard to do a proper gun rack installation on a Volvo...

Well, you could strap two .50-Cals to the ski rack.

And one on the rear bike rack.

Take the women SHOOTING! Teach them and once they get over any fear, they'll have FUN! Then, use THAT to encourage them buy their own weapons and ammo, thus increasing your total arsenal holdings.

A few years ago, my husband took me to the shooting range as a birthday gift (something I had always wanted to do). I loved it! He recently purchased a 9mm and I want to go back SOON to get comfortable with it. Unfortunately, I am intimidated by rifles and shotguns. I want to learn, but I can barely lift my Husband's 12G and rifles, so I am afraid to shoot them. Any recs on good weapons for a petite woman?

I have a M1903A3 for distant targets 600-800 yards, the M-1 for closer in, and the 12ga for personal distances. Backup is the Ruger .45acp.

BTW all, MAKE SURE that you have sufficient amounts of food, water, and something to COOK WITH! Several bags of charcoal and a hobo stove does the trick. Also, make sure that you have a gallon of plain bleach for water purification.

Excellent advise. I have a fifthwheel with a forty gallon freshwater tank. We fill it before every hurricane. My wife keeps a month's worth of food in the house for us and the dogs. We have an evacuation plan. Every member of the family has a cell phone. My mother lives 600 miles from here and she is our point of contact if we get separated. Everyone will call her and she'll keep track of all of us. We also have a generator and enough fuel to last a week. We also keep a chainsaw in case we have to cut our way out.

We've had a lot of experience here in the Florida Panhandle.

I haven't found women to be too opposed to firearms, at least here in Texas. They like the idea of "the Great Equalizer", if you know what I mean. And a .357 snub nose looks so cute nestled in a lovely woman's dainty purse.

A good many of those people I was talking about from my former workplace lived in Chapel Hill NC. It's a leftist, cesspool.

Not this article. Got to it free and clear, without having to resort to BugMeNot. In fact, there's a Firefox extension that lets you right-click on the username dialog box if the site requires registration, and it automatically hits BugMeNot and fills in the fields if they have a known username/pass combo for that site.

What if FR made a deal with BugMeNot so a poster automatically factors in the BMN link on the top of the post? Freepers will link without it being a two or three step process... Anyone know if it can be done?

Hey, enough with the Volvo-driving comments. We have two old Volvos, been driving Volvos for 25 years and they have served us well. Our newest car is 1992, boxy, practical practical, long-running and not very fancy — a perfect car for conservatives. Don’t have a gun yet, but thinking about it. Especially since Katrina.

Please don't buy a firearm. A fly-swatter is safer, and y'all may not be able to fill out the yellow ATF form.

In MSM-Speak - two firearms is a "cache of weapons". Three or more is an "arsenal."

With 18, I must have a marine armory.

I'm afraid the water heater won't stay above the floodwater. And I don't want to stockpile those stupid little yuppie bottles. I was thinking about maybe those 5 gallon bottles the water companies sell maybe, like Ozarks.

Would City water hold up I wonder?

I monitor wear. I don't see it as a real issue right now. If I burned one up I have at least two firearms in each caliber except the 270 which would be used for sniping so not high volume.

We pretty much do the same thing. We keep a CLOSE eye on the semi-autos that get used a LOT, but the bolt guns just don't receive the same level of wear and tear.

My 270 is a Browning A Bolt composite stock. Has Leupold Gold Ring 3X10 50 mm Obj scope. Mostly used for Whitetail deer but I have shot paper at 1000 yards. I've had it since 92 and probably have fired no more than 200 rounds. The scope has never been adjusted since I first sighted it in. Here I am without facial hair but well armed. The Area 51 sign is photoshopped.

Dillon presses, dozens of reloading die sets, dozens of bullet molds, 100's of pounds of wheel weights, casting pots, kegs of powder, M's of caps, M's of brass cases, M's of gas checks. Running out of ammo for me, not bloody well likely.

I know what you mean.

I have my own personal bathroom next to my home office. The wallpaper motif is bird hunting.

I have a 100 year commorative USMC KA-BAR on one wall. And a 12 ga SBS field gun on another wall.

Some of our friends are scared to use my bathroom.

Some of them have children in the military! *rolling eyes*

I used to reload but factory ammo got so cheap and time got so scarse. If I'm ever in a fight long enough to run out they would probably use something heavy enough to take me out before I ran out.

Home invasions are usually over in seconds.

If there is a revolution, survival will depend on one's ability to evade rather than fight.
