BATON ROUGE, La. -- Gun sales across the South boomed after the first reports surfaced of armed looters roaming the streets of New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. And images of shots being fired at relief workers only elevated fears in some communities.
Now, as hundreds of thousands of people displaced from their homes are being resettled, gun store owners say they're being flooded by a demand for guns--particularly in Southern states and others where many of the hurricane victims are being relocated.
Mostly, they say, the demand is being fueled by "good people" wanting to protect their families and property. That includes some who might not otherwise purchase such weapons, they add.

After you strap those two .50s to the ski rack of that Volvo:
Take a picture of it and post it on DU, then watch their servers melt down with as all the nervous nelly alarmist gun-grabbers start screaming and posting in unison about a domestic terrorist vehicle, obviously being used to scare the poor unfortunate looters.

What irony. Folks buying guns, that the left hates, to protect themselves from the very people the left maintain from cradle to grave (regardless of actual need).

I haven't found women to be too opposed to firearms, at least here in Texas. They like the idea of "the Great Equalizer", if you know what I mean. And a .357 snub nose looks so cute nestled in a lovely woman's dainty purse.

That's funny, I think I crossed a line recently when I thought, "I better get a case", so I'm in the thousand round club. But now I want something with a little more knock down power than the 9mm I currently own, though after I put five our six rounds in the torso and a double tap to the noggin, I don't think the assailant is going to be up for much mayhem. I think's I wants a shotgun.

One thing I'm really interested in getting is a barrel of water for the attic of the house I'm buying. I need to find instructions on treating and keeping it treated. I know that untreated water becomes a lovely growing medium for all kinds of nasties, but if it's treated and sealed, does it remain sterile?

I monitor wear. I don't see it as a real issue right now. If I burned one up I have at least two firearms in each caliber except the 270 which would be used for sniping so not high volume.

By the way, you left out the "If you're not gonna practice RELIGIOUSLY with it, don't buy one" advice which was part of my litany.
YES! Thanks for adding that! Practice! Practice! PRACTICE! There is simply no substitute for practice!

You can use bottled water. It will stay good as long as it stays sealed and airtight. Also - the water in your hot water tank can be used if you shut off the incoming water flow so no contaminated water from the city water system enters. Make sure you turn off the circuit breaker for the hotwater heater so it doesn't boil dry. That way you have 40 gallons of safe water as long as the heater remains above any floodwater.

After staying up protecting their neighborhood from looters, Algier's Point resident Gareth Stubbs gets some sleep next to an arsenal of guns. The men slept outdoors on a balcony and heard gunfire on their streets every night following the storm.

No, I don't have experience with it. But it is the same design with both weapons, except for diffenences due to caliber. Great, simple, rugged, reliable design, and accurate too. So I would expect the Mini-30 to be great also. It is chambered for the 7.62 X 39 cartridge.

Mostly Volvo-driving Handgun Control types who let their ideology get in the way of thinking "what if...", I'm willing to bet. A Volvo driver with a handgun?
Now THAT is a scary thought.

NOTHING and I mean NOTHING beats a 12ga up close and personal. When you rack that PUMP, you instill FEAR into their nasty little hearts.
Yes, it may well work. But should the deviant be armed, you've given away your location. It's why I keep everything locked and loaded.
