Shot on 9/8/35 in Baton Rouge. Died 2 days later. His 1920s policies seemed to lead right into the New Deal and modern day big goverment. The reason Sean Penn was LA was filming another version of 'All the King's Men' which has a 'Long' like figure at its center.

Mr. Weiss did this country a huge favor.

Weis had just come from Germany and Long's rise to power and consolidation of it reminded him of Hitler.

"I don't have no skeletons in my closet...they all running around out of the front lawn."

Here are some quotes from Huey Long:

"The time has come for all good men to rise above principle."

"One of these days the people of Louisiana are going to get good government - and they aren't going to like it."

I recall another one that I can't find on the Net, paraphrasing, "I'm going to take from the rich and spread it around thick." (Hillary may have paid homage to his statue in Baton Rouge.)

Bush's fault, of course.

Actually, strong evidence suggests he was killed in a crossfire by his own trigger happy guards while they were at shooting Weiss.

He was planning on challenging FDR in the 1936 election. I would assume in the Primaries. It can't happen here!

I'm not sure Huey would have prevailed in 36, but remember many were angry with FDR when he tried to pad the Supreme Court, and in 1940, Long might have had a much better shot.

Actually, they recently recovered the gun and had it tested. Huey was shot by one of his bodyguards, not Mr. Weiss. The guards were so busy pumping lead into Mr. Weiss that they got careless on where they were aiming (or it was from a ricochet).

Ok, so I'll credit Weiss with the assist.

Wasn't Long the guy who ruined his opponents by hinting that they weren't pure whites?

And didn't Long once accuse an opponent of being a "homo sapien"???

My mom's father was a city worker's labor leader in La. and was with his assistant when he met Long in a hotel room at a Democrat party function in New Orleans. At the conclusion of the meeting Long asked my shabbily dressed granddad and assistant how much money they had with them.

Their reply of only a few dollars was ansered by Long, "I never knew any labor men who had money". He pulled out the black box and handed each one a wad of cash.

I am pretty sure that Weiss was a medical doctor. Plus there is a lot of question whether he actually fired a gun at all at Long or even had a gun on him when he confronted Long in the La Statehouse hallway.

Weiss' family had some sort of beef with Long, and Weiss approached Long to confront him and argue with him and may only have swung a fist at him. Long's several bodyguards immediately began firing, and many shots were fired indiscriminantly. Long may very well have been hit by his own bodyguards instead of by Dr. Weiss.

Additionally, I do not believe that Wiess had recently come fropm Europe to the U.S. but that he was a native-born citizen.

Long's bodyguards are said to have located Dr. Weiss' car in the parking lot and removed his car gun from the glove box and taken it into the Statehouse as a throw-down to show that Weiss had shot Long. Carrying a car gun was apparently nearly universal in La in those days.

Weiss' family always vehemently denied that he was anything like the sort of guy who would seek to gun someone down, even someone as wicked as Huey Long. Also, whatever the problem that the family had with Long, it was not so serious to cause a responsible and sane person to (which Weiss was) seek to kill someone.

I just checked, and you are partially correct, Weiss had studied medicine in Austria a couple of years before he shot Long. I assumed you meant that he had immigrated to the U.S., but now realize that you may not have meant it that way.
