Part of New Orleans's southern charm comes from its green canopy of live oak trees. Many of those trees have been standing in water for more than a week, depriving their roots of oxygen.

Too short for utility poles. They will make nice furniture though.

I've seen them survive in ponds for 2 years before succumbing to water. Of course this water is slightly more toxic. A good dose of the wrong toxin could certainly speed up the process.

Couldn't help myself.
In other news, Celine Dione is quoted as saying "These trees aren't wet. Some of these trees are so dry that they have never touched water before. Can't we let them touch the water just once!"

Actually the sewer/bacteria won't harm the trees over a short period of exposure. Oil of gas or other chemicals could be another story. Live oaks are tough trees.

It's amazing that a LOWLAND COASTAL species can't survive having it's roots submerged for a few weeks.

Thousands of people dead... and they're worried about oak trees.
Yep, liberals care. They *really* do.

I Saw in Louisiana a Live-Oak Growing
I saw in Louisiana a live-oak growing,
All alone stood it and the moss hung down from the branches,
Without any companion it stood there uttering joyous leaves of dark green,
And its look, rude, unbending, lusty, made me think of myself,
But I wondered how it could utter joyous leaves standing alone there
without its friend near, for I knew I could not,
And I broke off a twig with a certain number of leaves upon it,
and twined around it a little moss,
And brought it away, and I have placed it in sight in my room,
It is not needed to remind me as of my own dear friends,
(For I believe lately I think of little else than of them,)
Yet it remains to me a curious token, it makes me think of manly love;
For all that, and though the live-oak glistens there in Louisiana
solitary in a wide flat space,
Uttering joyous leaves all its life without a friend or lover near,
I know very well I could not.
