FNC's Major Garrett: Red Cross Blocked by Order of the Louisiana State Government

The Red Cross Blocked

The Fox News Channel's Major Garrett was just on my show extending the story he had just reported on Brit Hume's show: The Red Cross is confirming to Garrett that it had prepositioned water, food, blankets and hygiene products for delivery to the Superdome and the Convention Center in the immediate aftermath of the hurricane, but were blocked from delivering those supplies by orders of the Louisiana state government, which did not want to attract people to the Superdome and/or Convention Center. Garrett has no paper trail yet, but will follow up on his verbal confirmation from sources at the highest levels of the Red Cross.

The transcript of the interview will be available at Radioblogger later this afternoon.

And here is a very interesting article from Septmber of 2004:

Debate continues over Superdome as potential hurricane shelter

Seems that the debate over using the Superdome goes back almost a year, and that no one in New Orleans thought it would be a great place in a Cat 4 or 5 hurricane.

Key graphs:

"If we were to lose power, if we were to lose plumbing facilities, if a storm were to hit and create flooding in the area; the Superdome would not be a desirable place to be," he said.

The American Red Cross admits it would not stay in town for a severe hurricane. Workers would offer supplies and training to the Dome but would then leave to ensure aid for the hurricane's aftermath.

Kay Wilkins, spokesperson for the American Red Cross, said, "While we're saying we;re going to move our volunteers and staff out of the risk area into areas where its safer for them to be it doesn't mean we're not going to be here ahead of time for others."

Mayor Nagin said the city has more than 80,000 people without transportation access, and when the next hurricane evacuation there will be thousands of people who will not, or cannot, leave, highlighting the city's urgency of finding the most suitable place for shelter.

Forgive me for not getting a chance to read through all the replies to see if someone else asked this, but wasn't there a story this week about FEMA also blocking the Red Cross from coming in?

Is this a correction to that story, or another instance of the Red Cross being denied access?

How could a federal agency that wasn't even on the scene yet block the Red Cross from entering a local site?

Buh-bye, Blanco!

She should be prosecuted. Seriously. You don't leave people without food and water when you can help them.

There are reports from Shep Smith that they actually positioned troops on the bridge to prevent people from leaving the convention center. That's a very ugly story that will unfold very soon.

How many people STILL think there will be Senate hearings.

Frist announced 3-4 days back that there will be hearings and that estate tax hearings are cancelled.

There will be hearings. Some people may not like it but Congress has an obligation to find out what went wrong. I suspect that the Democrats are going to suddenly want to change the subject.

Oh dear, I have my suspicions, too. One very simple one is that this is racial, meaning that Blanco hates these victims. But I have other, even more nefarious suspicions. I've suspected that the people shooting the rescuers were terrorists- perhaps a sleeper cell. Now I wonder. Could they have just been Blanco's thugs? Where are those other cops? Did those two "suicides" really take their own lives?

But on the other hand, Nagin could have thwarted this entire problem by deploying the school buses to evacuate to poor. Still, I bet a lot would not have anyplace to go, and would hang around the Super Dome. That's pretty predictable.

Marty Evans, the president of the Red Cross, told the exact same thing to Larry King on his Friday show....Thanks for posting this. I saw the Fox story and was skeptical, since no source was cited either for the Red Cross or the State. Looks like the story is spot-on true. (Paging Nancy Pelosi!)

@@@@

The "word" FEMA was used, but it was the state [of Louisiana] Emergency Management Authority who issued the order of refusal. Sort of like reporters using "stem cell research" when they should be referencing "embryonic stem cell research."

Editorializing by omission.

FEMA doesn't have any local authority, unless the local authorities delegate it.

Yes it appears that the smartest woman in the world and a former partner at the Rose Law firm just violated the first law of being an ambulance chaser-
"Don't ask a question if you don't know the answer"
The smartest woman in the world has been shooting her mouth off about a commission\investigation-she should have thought about that before opening the pie hole-she might not like what she hears.
Hey Hitlery-how about this, we let Guliani run the investigation. After all he dealt with a "disaster" first hand, and from his past history prosecuting mobsters, know how to nail the perps.

Did anyone see a MSM interview where they asked the LA governor or mayor if THEY knew about the convention center? If they did, did they ask the governor or mayor whether they notified someone at FEMA? To my knowledge, only Federal (Bush) officials are being asked whether they knew about the convention center. It is only being suggested to Federal officials that they have someone watch television. Why aren't the governor and mayor receiving that suggestion?
