The Fox News Channel's Major Garrett was just on my show extending the story he had just reported on Brit Hume's show: The Red Cross is confirming to Garrett that it had prepositioned water, food, blankets and hygiene products for delivery to the Superdome and the Convention Center in the immediate aftermath of the hurricane, but were blocked from delivering those supplies by orders of the Louisiana state government, which did not want to attract people to the Superdome and/or Convention Center. Garrett has no paper trail yet, but will follow up on his verbal confirmation from sources at the highest levels of the Red Cross.

Debate continues over Superdome as potential hurricane shelter
Seems that the debate over using the Superdome goes back almost a year, and that no one in New Orleans thought it would be a great place in a Cat 4 or 5 hurricane.

"If we were to lose power, if we were to lose plumbing facilities, if a storm were to hit and create flooding in the area; the Superdome would not be a desirable place to be," he said.
The American Red Cross admits it would not stay in town for a severe hurricane. Workers would offer supplies and training to the Dome but would then leave to ensure aid for the hurricane's aftermath.
Kay Wilkins, spokesperson for the American Red Cross, said, "While we're saying we;re going to move our volunteers and staff out of the risk area into areas where its safer for them to be it doesn't mean we're not going to be here ahead of time for others."
Mayor Nagin said the city has more than 80,000 people without transportation access, and when the next hurricane evacuation there will be thousands of people who will not, or cannot, leave, highlighting the city's urgency of finding the most suitable place for shelter.

For goodness sake, they could have passed stuff out to people walking to the Superdome even after the Dome was occupied to quota. There would also have been lots of room in the dry part of New Orleans for a tent city -- want tents, call a carnival company, there are lots of them there. That stuff would have helped a lot of people who are sick now, NOT be sick.

Those busses COULD be refurbished/restored, for probably less than a thousand bucks a piece -- a real benefit to some local garages and unemployed mechanics, and even "unskilled labor", for much of the work.
But, I have NO doubt that they will be scrapped for bottom dollar, and then the taxpayers hit up for NEW busses to replace them.
From the photos of the one that heroic kid "stole" to save that busload of people he drove to Houston (man, I hope the idiots do NOT prosecute him -- he deserves an AWARD!), it looks to me like those are nearly brand new busses. When I was a kid, the schoolbusses were old, rickety, noisy lunkers, but they got us to school and back every day, and NEVER broke down. It's amazing what a little bit of preventive maintenance will accomplish.
Oh, well. Maybe some TRULY needy school systems will buy them up on the cheap, and save at least SOME of them from the smelters.

Anyhow, there is probably some state law that says they can't use "flood vehicles" which means a vehicle that was in water over its axles (unless designed to do that). But nothing a session of their assembly can't fix.
Speaking of Larry King, did anyone catch the interview with the governor a day or two after the hurricane hit? He asked her about the reports of prison riots, with hostages taken.
She had this la-dee-da look on her face, and nonchalontly told him that since they'd lost all communications with the prisons, she really didn't know what was going on there, and had no way of answering his question.
Hard-hitting journalist that he is, Larry moved right on to the next question without skipping a beat. What a dolt.
Isn't that at least weekly fare in New Orleans anyhow?
But they do have to get the water out, and the longer people stay, the worse the sewage problem gets, and the more people will be sick.

Patrick "Leaky" Leahy should get thousands of copies of Garrett's interview with the head of the ARC in his in-box today. Don't ask the question if you don't want to know the answer....
He'll just turn around and say he was talking about the feds, not the Red Cross.
But I imagine the result would have been the same, wouldn't it? If the state Homeland Security policy is not to deliver food and water to people who SHOULD be leaving the city, then it must apply to the feds trying to get that food and water to those folks as well.
I'm really glad you said that Tom Thumb- the solution to this is not a military-run dictatorship.
