WASHINGTON, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Ten buses sent from Washington to help evacuate victims of Hurricane Katrina returned nearly empty on Wednesday after volunteers could find only one person willing to come to the U.S. capital, a city official said.
The convoy drove around several days looking for people displaced by the disaster but poor federal planning hampered their efforts, city spokeswoman Sharon Gang said.
"As we were in touch with federal officials we were told different things along the way," Gang said. "There was a lack of coordination."
Those evacuees the volunteers did find said they didn't want to come to Washington, Gang said.
Some 300 evacuees arrived in Washington by plane Tuesday though several said they had expected to go to Texas, according to news reports.
The bus convoy left Washington on Friday carrying water and other supplies, along with police officers and emergency medical technicians.
Volunteers planned to return by Sunday, but stuck around for several extra days after they could only find one person willing to leave for Washington.
"We are still ready to fill those 10 buses with people in need. Unfortunately, the chaotic situation on the ground down there has hampered efforts to create an organized evacuation plan," Mayor Anthony Williams said in a statement on Monday.
Gang said the mayor still considered the convoy a success because it brought needed supplies to the region, and one of the medical volunteers helped a man who was having a stroke.
The Department of Homeland Security was not immediately available for comment.
Had to get that dig in....
LOL.
New Orleans = Washington, DC
DC could screw-up a two-car funeral...and this story proves it.
LOL. Leaving NOLA for DC? I don't think so...
Wonder what would happen if the when to NOLA north Chicago.
"but poor federal planning hampered their efforts, city spokeswoman Sharon Gang said."
I suppose that only federal relief workers are left since the NO police officers in Las Vegas playing the slots and the New Orleans bus drivers union president claims that their contract does not require them to drive out hurricane refugees.
BWAHAHAHAHA!
I f this were the bus to Detroit it would be filled to capacity. Of course, that would be for the return trip to New Orleans.
Democrats in Action
ROTFLMAO! How did I know that would be in there?
Ah. It's the other Washington -- D.C.
Heh, MA had offered space at Otis AF Base on the Cape to evacuees. None were interested. Can't say I blame them.
Well, going from crime ridden New Orleans to crime ridden D.C. is not exactly a win win situation
Only one person would evacuate to D.C.? Hey those folks in NO aren't so dumb after all.
" volunteers could find only one person willing to come to the U.S. capital"
ROTF!
They may be poor, but they ain't stupid!
No harm done. It was all symbolism and no substance anyway.
Perhaps they weren't able to contact those most likely to thrive in that environment.
The looters would fit right in with the bureaucrats.
