look, i understand that liberals are going to start wheezing whenever they have a pretext. this is a pretext. i also understand that well-meaning people -- and a few not-so-well-meaning ones -- resist efforts to get people to be self-reliant. but this is a horrible tragedy, and no, things are not "working out pretty well" for the victims.

Well, I certainly cringed when I heard her remarks. Its a little like telling someone who has had an infected leg amputated that now you don't have to deal with that thing you can just go right on out and dance on your prosthetic replacement. Might be true, but it glosses over a lot of loss and suffering.
An ill considered remark, by an elderly woman, but not indicative of where her true heart is, unfortunate in that hay will be made, and the people who are suffering will be used to make points. sad.
