I have to agree. Anyone that could stay behind in what will be worse than the Love canal had better make their peace with the Lord. If the mosquito-borne diseases don't get you, some other malady will. It is only a matter of time.
What makes them liberal? Their refusal to leave their homes? They already saw the destructive results of Nagin's previous instructions, why would they trust him now? Forcing these people out of their home by using federal troops is something which a Liberal will do and not the other way around. They have the right to put their life in peril if they wish so, especially on their own property. So don't be so puerile, my friend!
I don't think its liberals who don't want to evacuate. Its people who don't want to leave their homes and pets to looters. I think these are the strong people of NO who don't want government help. They are used to taking care of themselves and their own. Their homes are ok. Maybe no utilities but some people aren't afraid of a challenge. There is a whole town in Mississippi that was flattened and no government aid or even rescue people came. They were totally alone. The townspeople started their own town from the rubble. They set up a soup kitchen, salvaged what food they could from the rubble, cleared off a place for the kids to play, even set up a church. They built shelters from the rubble and were cooking over campfires. My point is alot of people make the best of the resources they have left. Its amazing what folks can do when faced with a challenge. I think we have been overexposed to the weak in society these days so we don't realize what an indomitable spirit most Americans have. I guess life post- Katrina in NO is still better then alot of the rest of the world have it. The military said they will help them with food and water. I think that with all the help the evacuees are getting, the people who want to stay aren't asking for too much, just a little help till they can make it on their own again.

I think you're missing the point: the folks who won't evac are not the liberals, they're the conservatives, who are conserving their homes and properties. The stinking mayor is the liberal.
Unfortunately your tag of liberal may be misplaced.....could be just a lot of AMERICAN CITIZENS who would like to keep what they have and even possibly rebuild their city. Believe it or not, some people are capable of this without a lot of help from the all powerful government.

Heard a story from someone who lived in a hurricane zone:
When it came time for a mandatory evacuation in one of the Carolinas the authorities handed those who refused to evacuate permanent markers & told them to write their social security numbers somewhere on their bodies so they could identify their bodies after the disaster passed. Worked every time. LOL
