Pressure To Pick Minority Justice

WASHINGTON -- President Bush faces renewed pressure to name a woman or non-white to the new Supreme Court vacancy - a choice that could ease a difficult confirmation process. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., chairman of the Judiciary Committee, said Tuesday that two women on the court "are a minimum," adding, "My preference would be to see that kind of diversity maintained."

"The committee's top Democrat, Sen. Patrick J. Leahy, D-Vt., agreed, noting that Canada's Supreme Court, which has nine members, has four women, including the chief justice.

"It works pretty good for them," he said. "I'd love to see something like that.""

...faces renewed pressure

What a load of crap. Bush will not appoint a woman because of pressure, he will do it because he wants to. If he appoints someone like JRB she will be confirmed in a cakewalk and the MSM and Dems (including Specter) know this; they want to be able to claim a victory of some sort... any sort counts at this point... so they push for someone he will apoint anyway and then take credit for forcing him to 'do the right thing'.

I would have elevated Thomas to replace Rhenquist and JRB to replace Thomas and let the Dems destroy both on TV while confirming the clean cut white guy with no problem.

Yep, nominate Judge Brown. Watch them squirm.

She is an excellent choice.

Specter has veto power over any Bush pick.

So, Bush will not pick someone Specter does not like.

Hatch should have been Jud. Chairman. Another GOP cave coming home to roost.

Now we need to look to Canada for guidance in picking our Supreme Court? And these guys wonder why the get killed at the polls.

That's my pick too. I want to see the left filibuster a black woman.

Spector's inbred socialism requires that he go for equality no matter what. He doesn't know that it's the mind that counts, not gender.

This kind of decision was expected when Spector was made chairman of the Judcial Committee. But after all, Spector had seniority, it was "his turn." The wagons were drawn around him and the Congressional Protective Machinery went to work to protect this traitor. The people of Pennsylvania shoul be ashamed of themselves.

Spector is a RINO (Republican in name only).

Really. This is a setup pitch if I've ever seen one---the old "tar baby" routine yet again by Bush. A woman? A minority? Are you sure? Ok, ok, I'm reluctant, but JRB.

Dear Senator Spector,

we need more women in the congress. Please resign so the governor can appoint one in your place.

Sphincter may as well STFU. Bush is his own man. He will do what he damn well pleases as he fully understands the implications of a SCOTUS choice both now and in the long term future. Bush hasn't nominated anyone yet that doesn't have a solid conservative foundation.

Mrs. Specter is also Judge Specter. We know who put Joan on the court. Arlin is sick and hid it from the voters. He is in treatment. We wish him well. The voters in Pennsylvania deserved the truth from him. I guess that would be expecting too much.

Just think of the ratings on c-span during the Coulter hearings! It would probably be the hottest ticket in town.
