The near total evacuation of the major American port city of New Orleans, Louisiana was accomplished between Tuesday afternoon, August 30 and Friday afternoon, September 2, 2005. This evacuation occurred while other search, rescue, relief and evacuation operations were simultaneously being conducted throughout the Gulf Coast between approximately Lafayette, Louisiana, on the west and the Florida panhandle on the east - an area of about 90,000 sq. miles, or the size of the entire nation of Great Britain.
I'd say this amazing achievement is the opposite of slow. I'd say that it's a stunning accomplishment and one that demonstrates superb organization, remarkable logistics flow, and the greatness of the American spirit.
From the following photographic timeline, it should be clear to all reasonable people that the failure of government response occurred before the hurricane hit, and it occurred solely at the local and state level.
My home had very little damage, thank God. But we were cut off for about 4 days. there was no federal or local help. 3 days after the storm hit we had two pickup trucks from a community in alabama bring in ice, and that wasn't nearly enough even though they did the best they could. there is still no federal presence in this area and there are still some in our community who have no power. Since this area is rural everyone has a pump so no power no water. However, there are many church groups in the area now.
Thanks Wolfstar for a great resource.
Thankfully the internet keeps things from being flushed down the memory hole by the LSM
They have a new mantra everyday that gets more and more shrill as the day goes by. Today they are on the "toxic water" kick. Every hour their reports are picking up steam and half truths. I just heard one info babe say the waters in NO are extremely toxic and if you come in contact with it seek medical help immediately. I guess she has ignored all the people wading around in it this past week. I swear the media gets more ignorant of facts everyday. Even Fox News and Bill O'Rielly's constant drumbeat that Bush didn't act soon enough. Damn the facts!

Most awesome job, Wolf! Thanks.
Wonderful Piece. With your permission I'd like to copy your post and pass it around.
Great idea. I saved them, too.
We are ok. The stores here are finally starting to open now that power is coming back on. I have seen some footage now of coastal Mississippi and it is heartbreaking. I've been more concerned lately with some of the people in rural areas like we are in. there was a mayor of a community north of us (State Line, Ms) who called a radio station in Mobile several days ago that said his community had no water, ice, gas and that they had a lot of elderly in the area and he had not been able to get in touch with any state or federal officials and had not heard from any. But at the time he only had access to one phone. I haven't heard anymore more about that area since then.
I'm not sure how many people live in this county. This area is mostly rural
I can't imagine how it must feel to be so cut off from the rest of the world. I wonder if the mayor was ever able to reach anyone. This is so heartbreaking.
Thanks so much for the documentation.
I know that the television station that he reached in Mobile, WKRG channel 5, told him that they would do what they could to help him. I feel confident that some church group probably heard him over the air and got some supplies to them. that how we were getting ice a couple of days after the storm hit. People who live in Bay Minette, Al. heard we had no ice here and a couple of guys cmae with ice in the back of their trucks with an escort from a Bay Minette police officer.we were sure glad to see them!
"And wherever I am, in this World or the Next, I'll be the little old lady with glasses, waving the flag on the RIGHT Side of the parade! "
And this little old lady with glasses will be standing right beside you!
You're very welcome.
I'm home for lunch. Turned on the TV quickly before heading back to work, and I see that Wolf Blitzer over on CNN is obsessing about the diehards who refuse to leave NO. Making a big deal about why the military won't force people out of their homes.
He is also chattering about potential health hazards. He just asked the U.S. Surgeon General if there have been any communicable disease outbreaks in NO. Sheesh!
Someone ought to buy Wolf a clue that the disaster area is way larger than one city.
Over on Fox News, they are talking to Norm Mineta about restoration of highways and bridges. That, at least, is more useful info for people who need to use those interstates and other highways, plus the waterways.
I pay scant attention to MSNBC, so don't know what they were chattering about.
The MSM are a near total waste.
How many days has this photo been all over FR and the media is just now hearing about it. And look at all the trouble they went to trying to get their grubby hands on any paper they could about Bushs guard duty.
Thank goodness for good neighbors! There are so many citizens stepping up to the plate to help until the "official" help arrives.
What a shameful job the MSM are doing to help the nation understand the scope of this disaster. Where are the basic stats about total number of people affected, total homes and businesses lost, total number of hospitals and schools affected, total cities, towns and smaller communities affected, total farms affected, etc.
The disaster is far, far larger than the flooded streets of New Orleans.
