A landmark bill to legalize gay marriage passed the Assembly by a single vote Tuesday and now goes to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has not said whether he will sign it.
The measure passed on a 41-to-35 votes, with no support from Republicans. The author of the bill, Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, worked desperately throughout the day to find the votes needed for passage.
The Senate approved AB849 last week, marking the first time a legislative body in the country to approve a bill legalizing same-sex marriage. But supporters had a harder time mustering support in the Assembly, where the bill had already failed once this year, falling four votes short.

California dims stay in power whilst regularly subverting the will of constituents the same way WA state dims do, completly misleading them with the help of the media. Take WA's last session. They exercised "emergency" clauses on unpopular bills 98 times on everything from taxing rain collected in buckets to adopting CA's emission standards, to a 9 cent a gallon gas tax, right after a 5 cent gas tax, right after a 9 cent tax was soundly defeated, and oh btw next year we get another 2.8 cents gas tax, and all kinds of excise taxes and new registration fees just a couple years after having an initiative abolishing them. Our previous governor and his attorney general who is now governor have gone to court to try to take away our right of referendum, now that Gurgles is governor, she simply subverts the process by applying emergency clauses, which disallow referendums.
The state's 3 major rags and all it's TV MSM either completely ignore the new bills, flat out lie about them, print wildly misleading editorials, or blame it on George.
Most of the citizens in this state are wildly misled about the major issues of the day or don't even know they exist.
This is a state where Agnostic, Gay and Communist agendas are VERY actively pushed upon our children from very early ages, as is California, where I grew up. The people who push these agendas have taken great pains over very many years to place themselves in positions of influence in government, schools, and media, recruiting more like them whenever possible, while libertarians and alot of conservatives, people who don't have any agenda but getting their job done for the day and returning to their families, have sat back and let these groups organize to prey on our youth, their primary goal.
They have to recruit our youth or they will become socially irrelevant, which for a commie or a homo is worse than being extinct.
The peer pressure to become homosexual, left wing, and deny God is extreme in most colleges across the nation, very significant in middle and high school, and in text books in some elementary schools. Notice how "intelligent design" is only described as a "new alternative" to evolution?
Do the newspapers care that most of the people reading the articles will be offended by the anti God slant, or all the omissions of what our representatives are doing? Hell no, they know (most) people will still buy the rags for the rest of the news, not having anything to compare it with to know it's slanted, and eventually the sheep start thinking this must be the social norm, or it wouldn't be printed in all the papers, right?
What Free Republic is all about:
Statement by the founder of Free Republic
As a conservative site, Free Republic is pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-Constitution, pro-Bill of Rights, pro-gun, pro-limited government, pro-private property rights, pro-limited taxes, pro-capitalism, pro-national defense, pro-freedom, and-pro America. We oppose all forms of liberalism, socialism, fascism, pacifism, totalitarianism, anarchism, government enforced atheism, abortionism, feminism, homosexualism, racism, wacko environmentalism, judicial activism, etc. We also oppose the United Nations or any other world government body that may attempt to impose its will or rule over our sovereign nation and sovereign people. We believe in defending our borders, our constitution and our national sovereignty.Free Republic is private property. It is not a government project, nor is it funded by government or taxpayer money. We are not a publicly owned entity nor are we an IRS tax-free non-profit organization. We pay all applicable taxes on our income. We are not connected to or funded by any political party, news agency, or any other entity. We sell no merchandise, product or service, and we offer no subscriptions or paid memberships. We accept no paid advertising or promotions. We are funded solely by donations (non tax deductible gifts) from our readers and participants.
We aggressively defend our God-given and first amendment guaranteed rights to free speech, free press, free religion, and freedom of association, as well as our constitutional right to control the use and content of our own personal private property. Despite the wailing of the liberal trolls and other doom & gloom naysayers, we feel no compelling need to allow them a platform to promote their repugnant and obnoxious propaganda from our forum. Free Republic is not a liberal debating society. We are conservative activists dedicated to defending our rights, defending our constitution, defending our republic and defending our traditional American way of life.
I think.
"OK. Either I'M tired or you are.
Homosexuality IS about sex!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
I know, that was stupid. It didn't sound that dumb while I was typing it. I was trying to seperate gay marriage legislation from the ugly details. Not possible.
Thanks. I see your point. I'm sure I read that when I joined but I never really abided by it. I will in the future and if I get the urge not to, I'll refer back to the founder's statement. Again, thank you.
"Free Republic is not a liberal debating society." ...duh, not sure how I missed that one but now I get it.
Big "if."
Good to see the CA legislature taking up issues that truly effect the lives of millions of Californians. Now on to legislating nacho cheese with jalapenos.
Now that lavender "marriage" has passed both houses of the California General Assembly, bestiality must be next.
Only then can the legislature break new ground in enacting a law protecting sex with vegetables (the kind that grow on plants not the kind that Californians elect to their General Assembly).
It would be helpful if the California Supreme Court would decide that current policy denies vegetables like jalapeno peppers or their human lovers "equality" under the law, if Mayor Gavin Newsome of San Frolicsisco would perform weddings of various alleged humans and various members of the Jalapeno-American community, if there were a national editorial campaign led by the New York Slimes, the San Francisco papers, the Los Angeles papers pointing out the brutal and, frankly, speciesist suppression of jalapeno passions or of interspecies amorous activity, if jalapeno sexual studies departments were established at our nation's institutions of higher education.
AND jalapenos are not the only victims of speciesist suppression. What about Turkish Red and Acapulco gold? Many Americans of just the sort who want relations with jalapenos (or jalapenos who are relations?) would also like to, well, be orally and inhalationally involved with the non-burning end of a roll of maryjane which is burning at the other end.
Nacho cheese or maryjane may be one thing but I suspect that sexual abuse of jalapeno peppers may be its own cure and punishment.
Based on your expressed views, the likelihood of you living in unity with most Americans seems rather unlikely. We live in the wprld. We do not live in the world of Rand and a good thing we do not. I say this as a former Libertarian Party statewide officer who got married, had kids and grew up.
Ayn Carumba !
You DUmmie trolls are so much fun.....
"That is what you're worried about isn't it??? "
What's there to worry about? Are you really ignorant enough to think that people's opinions have changed in less than a year, especially red states?
The homosexual agenda is very dangerous. Trying to infiltrate elementary schools and teach kids about homosexuality, putting condoms on cucumbers in 2nd and 3rd grade is disgusting.
The homosexual movement along with the left seeks to silence it's critics via crimializing what they label as "hate speech". It's being done in Canada already, a christian preacher was taken to trial for criticizing homosexuals. Another wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and is being sued by a pro-homosexual activist in court. It will come to America soon.
The third thing that's dangerous about the homosexual movement is they've pushed for a disproportionate amount of funding for AIDS (a preventable disease). This is leading to the death of other people. The CDC dedicates more money to AIDS/HIV than to any other disease.
Cardiovascular disease is the leading killer of men and women (See "Adult mortality, Profile of the Nation's Health" CDC fact book 2000-2001).
In 2000, 710,760 people died from a cardiovascular related disease, and 553,091 died from cancer, yet only 14,270 died from AIDS.
Data from the CDC Budget Request Summary 2004
Disease Actual CDC Budget
HIV/AIDS -research and domestic $787,421,000
HIV/AIDS - Global (CDC wide) $143,720,000
HIV/AIDS - (CDC wide) $931,141,000
Total HIV/AIDS $1,962,282,000
Arthritis $13,808,000
Breast and Cervical Cancer $191,965,000
Diabetes $61,683,000
Hep C $21,930,000
Prostate Cancer $14,062,000
Skin Cancer $1,647,000
"Ok, homosexuals are just dupes in a marxist conspiracy to tear down the family and our country?"
Did you read #66 including the links I provided? Did you read the list of communist goals? These are the ways to destabilize a society, by destroying marraige, the family unit, etc. Homosexuality is not the last sexual degeneracy to be pushed by the left-- next will be pedophelia and bestiality. Anyone who opposes that will be labeled as a pedophobic, bestophobic, etc.
The uprooting of traditional family institutions is also a goal of the homosexual revolution, which -- like the feminist movement -- has its origins in the Marxist Left and has been nurtured by the power elite. The American "gay rights" movement was inaugurated by the Mattachine Society, founded in the 1950s by Marxists Harry Hay and Rudi Gernreich. The ongoing and shockingly successful campaign to normalize homosexuality is the product of a cunning strategy that uses the mass media, especially entertainment, and other Establishment-controlled institutions to re-educate the public in favor of the unmentionable vice. That strategy was outlined, with stunning candor, in After the Ball: How America Will Conquer Its Fear and Hatred of Gays in the '90's, by homosexual activists Marshall Kirk and Hunter Madsen. Taking a page from Gramsci (and Goebbels), the authors urged that the Lavender Lobby mount a full-scale propaganda war to bring about the "conversion" of America through a "planned psychological attack." Through such means, the authors predicted, Americans would be "cured" of their opposition to homosexual perversion, "whether they like it or not."
" I suppose empowering women with the vote is another grenade in the marxist arsenal."
Nice attempt at trying to discredit the argument. But gramsci's goals are prophetic and being followed to the T.
The feminist movement is based on abortion, convincing women that marraige is "oppressive", etc. These are ways in which the family unit is undermined.
In fact, hitler who was a socialist was pro-homosexual, pro-abortion, pro-euthanasia, pro-environment, pro-animal rights, anti tobacco, anti-gun. These are the same goals that the entire left has, they dont even know how much in common they share with Hitler.

Yes... DBeers already pointed out why I should just shut up and he was/is right so I will. (and will continue to do so in the future)
I'm not a Democrat or a Republican but I enjoy coming here because it's a patriotic crowd and I find alot of information that I don't think I'd find anywhere else.
