NEW ORLEANS - A two-year veteran of the New Orleans Police Department was arrested Wednesday in connection with the sexual assault of a woman he stopped on the street, according to investigators. Investigators said 5th District Officer Keith Griffin, 37, was working the night shift July 11 at about 3 a.m. when he stopped a 37-year-old woman riding a bicycle in the area of St. Claude Avenue and Flood Street. The woman was detained, driven to Flood and Deslonde streets and sexually assaulted, investigators said.

NOPD Shakeup Results In Reassignments For 5 Captains
UPDATED: 5:01 pm CDT August 3, 2005
NEW ORLEANS -- Following a July 15 memo stating that rising crime in the city would lead to changes at the New Orleans Police Department, it was disclosed Wednesday that several police captains are being reassigned.
First District Cmdr. Capt. Jeff Winn, a 20-year veteran, has been assigned as commander of Special Operations Tactical and SWAT units.
Third District Cmdr. Capt. James Scott, a 31-year veteran, has been assigned as commander of the 1st District.
Fifth District Cmdr. Capt. Lawrence Weathersby, a 20-year veteran, has been assigned to the administrative staff of the Operations Bureau.
Operations Bureau Administrative Staff Capt. John Bryson, a 25-year veteran, has been assigned as commander of the 5th District.
Traffic commander Capt. Donald Paisant, a 21-year veteran, has been assigned as commander of the 3rd District.
Special Operations Tactical and SWAT Cmdr. Capt. Harry Mendoza, a 30-year veteran, has been assigned as commander of Traffic.
The memo from Chief Operations Officer Warren Riley also called for fewer weekends off for officers and more crime-tracking meetings. It said there would be changes in the department unless "reasonable improvement" was made in the daily battle against crime.
The memo was dated just days before a rash of shootings in the Central City area.
The changes take effect Thursday.

No Soup for him. But does he still get to go to Vegas?
It's always horrible to read about public service people whom we should be able to trust abusing their power and committing crimes. All the more horrible during a time of crisis. But let's review - Mayor and Gov not taking action, thousands of lives lost, blaming others for their failures, nanny state mentality. Little surprise then that the NOPD is so seemingly corrupt, they are following their leadership in misusing power, each in their own way.
Which city would that be, Mr. Nagin???
They should shoot the bastard.
The problem is that New Orleans had a rising crime crisis and many corrupt cops just before the storm hit.
This is one of the reasons for the lawlessness in NO during the storm. Things were so bad in the police department leadership, they had to change captains in August 2005 -- like changing chair positions on the Titanic.
Your agenda is:
Very true, but the NOPD damn near has a copyright on it. These stories are nothing new. During a visit to the Big Easy over 20 years ago, I recall one cop holding up a liquor store and killing another off-duty cop/security guard in the process. Hundreds of cops on the force had felony records. The NOPD, like the city and the state are hopelessly corrupt and like any corrupt organization that relies on graft, intimidation, and deception to exist, they are completely incapable of preforming in a real emergency. (See the Democrat Party)
My impression of the New Orleans cops is that they had one primary mission -- protect the tourist areas and attractions so that the bucks kept rolling in. The rest of the city was little better, if any, than Nuevo Laredo.
Undoubtedly there were crooked cops in New Orleans. Heck, the whole city and state government is corrupt. It's an institution.
Sadly, I think the real story isn't so much that cops looted, raped, and ran off the job. It's that the majority stayed on and did the best they could in a horrible situation.
Respond to me with your own words, not some article.

------
The majority of police fled their posts. The minority stayed.
Many New Orleans police officers have quit, saying they weren't going to risk their lives fighting looters, AP quoted a Louisiana state police commander as saying.

The real question is ... Why are you defending corrupt cops?
And why bring race into it? No one mentioned the race of anyone in these press reports.
Are we not allowed to discuss corruption, cowardice, and ineptitude in New Orleans PD that resulted in the deaths of the very citizens they were sworn to protect?
Thanks TigerSmack.
No wonder they didn't post the date. This story is from August 24th.
Not that old of a story, but NOT THIS DAMN WEEK.
No wonder it didn't make any sense.
Reading that story about the National guard filling in the NOPD while they are on vacation in Las Vegas makes me wonder how long the mayor expects the National Guard to remain activated. Or is that even a consideration?
Why are you harping on this right now!?
You are standing on the bodies of dead people in order to get your message about corruption across.
Cindy Sheehan also did that.
I have a suspicion a lot of corruption is about to be uncovered in both New Orleans and the State. I heard there are Senators compiling lists of all the federal money sent to LA in years past and then they will try to figure out where the money went.
