The death and devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina and the slow response to the catastrophe by the Bush administration has shown up the "impotence" of the world's only superpower in the eyes of many in the Middle East.
"The Bush administration itself through its hegemony and enmity has targeted nations and people with all sorts of human Katrinas, shellings, killings and occupation," said Jordanian independent Arabic-language newspaper Al-Ghad.
"The failure of the United States to deal with the consequences of Hurricane Katrina has highlighted the weakness of the American superpower," wrote Egypt's government newspaper Al-Akhbar.
"[U.S. President George W.] Bush is seen as a bad omen by the people of the United States," added editorial writer Galal Doweidar.
"The anger and revulsion of the American people over the impotence in handling the catastrophe also reflects disappointment with Bush, whose years in power are now linked with multiple crises, even natural disasters," he said.
"Bush has failed twice: He is as incapable of handling the crisis in New Orleans as the crisis in Iraq," said another editorial writer in Al-Akhbar.
A commentator on state television in U.S. arch-foe Iran said the response to Katrina showed the United States was a superpower "only on paper" and was "blind to the widening gulf" affecting the black population and the poor.
The Al-Qaeda linked group headed by Iraq's most wanted man Abu Musab al-Zarqawi similarly suggested the devastation wrought by Katrina was the beginning of the end for the U.S.
"It is the start of its collapse," it said in an Internet statement. "Just yesterday, America attacked, killed and starved whomever it liked. Today, it is begging for oil and food. America has been hit by a divine strike. The curses of the oppressed have been fulfiled."

Of course they are, it's a mutual admiration society!
Not US impotence .... but the impotence of Nagin and "Blank-O" .... send the truth far and wide!
Isn't it nice to know that the media, newspapers, tv, and opinion has given our enemies the impression we are helpless.
When we are attacked, I am going to blame CNN big time....
He apparently doesn't know anything about the American people. I think under the circumstances, the response has been remarkable, no thanks to the locals in Lousiana.
Here's how it must have went:
"Indeed the American Infidels are truly impotent and powerless in the face of devastation."
"In other news, American bombs have blown up hospitals full of wounded Iraqi children..."
"Freepers Highlight Moslem Impotence in the Face of the USA"
it sounds more like a cialis commercial.
It's no accident how the Arab terrorist qoute our political Left and vice-versa.
I've been saying all week they're marking their calendars and taking copious notes on our shortcomings.
'Impotence' like in the face of the Iraqi oilwell fires? Impotence like a feudal society in the Twenty-first Century? Impotence like the Arab's ability - potence - to control their rebellious yout's, Osmama bin Pyjama and others? PHUI
Nuke'm to glass. Then re-drill the holes that we drilled in the first place.
They make the same mistakes as democrats. They assume that all Americans react the same way but they would be in a world of hurt if they try to attack in flyover country.
These people lose 10s of thousands in mild earthquakes!
Now watch as we rebuild an entire region, better, safer and stronger than before, faster than you can even imagine.
THEN try to call us weak...
They hysterical media is all the world gets to see.
That's it, no more, only hysteria on the part of liberal reporters.
Will they like us if we give them more money?
Bush is seen as a bad omen by the people of the United States," added editorial writer Galal Doweidar.
