5 Percent of D.C. Homes Have Loaded or Unlocked Guns Updated: Tuesday, Sep. 6, 2005 - 11:48 AM
WASHINGTON (AP) - The District may have a high number of gun-related crimes, but according to a new report it has the lowest number of homes with loaded and unlocked guns. A study published in the journal Pediatrics finds that only 5 percent of D.C. homes keep such guns around. Wyoming had the highest number. Thirty-three percent of that state's adults said they kept firearms in or around their homes unlocked and loaded.
D.C.'s low numbers are attributed to its long-standing bans on handguns and semiautomatic weapons.
The report finds overall 1.7 million U.S. children live in homes that have loaded and unlocked guns.

I suspect there may be some politically correct dumbasses who would admit to having locked weapons which they didn't even possess, for the 'message' it would send.
statisticly speaking, in regards to children and guns, children are defined as anyone under the age of 21, because you have to be 21 to buy a handgun. this includes gangbangers, emancipated children, felons, and JD's.
in regards to the 1.7million children, they worded it "children" because that number was much higher than "homes" (average home has more than one child).
The number isn't zero, because DC's law has a sort of "grandfather cluse." If you registered your gun prior to a certain date (1978, I believe), you are allowed to keep it. Otherwise, you are out of luck. Of course, as time goes on, the relatively small number of "grandfathered" gun owners becomes less and less. It will eventually dwindle to zero; it's just not there yet.

i dunno, my handgun safe under my bed is just big enough for my p220 and 4 mags. i'm sure if i swung it by the handle it would make a good club.

It was a rhetorical question. The Bradys define children (in their skewed "stats") as 19 and under.
I'm thinking that the Brady bunch define children up to 23 years, 11 months and 29 days.
A better and more accurate story would have begun with the headline:

Delivery cannot be made until the registration certificate for the firearm is approved by the Metropolitan Police Dept. Ammunition may be bought only for the caliber or gauge of a firearm registered to the buyer.

All firearms must be unloaded and disassembled or locked with a trigger lock except when kept at a registrant`s place of business or while being used for lawful "recreational" purposes. A D.C. license to carry a pistol is needed for one`s home or business and the pistol must also have been registered prior to September 24, 1976.
Self-defense in one`s home with a firearm is therefore legally precluded.

They also indicate that in addition to the registration, which also functions as a permit to purchase, the prospective owner must be licensed.
I don't know of anyone that lives in our area that does not have a hand gun, loaded or unloaded. I am also sure that 99.9% of everyone in our area also has a rifle and shotgun. We believe in the right to 'Keep and Bare Arms' for home protection and the hunting of tasty wildlife.
I don't think Vermont would care, but the Federales, specifically the BATFErs, would be on you like white on rice.

Not true, rifles are treated like shotguns. You can even have a handgun ... provided you registered it before Feb. 5, 1977. Otherwise, not. You can't carry it though, and can't even transport it, or a long gun, unless it's unloaded, and trigger locked or disassembled. You also have to have proof you are going to or coming from some "legitimate" recreation activity. The same applies to nonresident, in spite of the terms of the federal Firearm Owners Protectio Act of which provides:
Notwithstanding any state or local law, a person shall be entitled to transport a firearm from any place where he may lawfully possess it to any other place where he may lawfully possess such firearm if the firearm is unloaded and in the trunk. In vehicles without a trunk, the unloaded firearm shall be in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.
And Audie Murphy, who earned, and was awarded, the Congressional Medal of Honor in WWII was how old when he enlisted in the United States Army? And our kids in 'Nam carrying 16's shooting the Cong? I'm fed up with the hypocrisy in the US government. Our neighbor's son is in the 82 Airborne. He's 20 years old and is one hell of a Patriotic American. The "Guns 'R Not Us" (Gun Control Inc) crowd really twist my shorts. I took my 16 year old son to a trap range and he hit 14/25 in his first round. A few years later, I gave him a lifetime membership to the NRA. We have several loaded pistols in our home. Everyone in the family knows where they are. All are trained in using these weapons.
What the Pelossi's, Clintons, Kennedys and Schumers of the world do not understand is RESPONSIBILITIES for one's actions. Ted, you've killed more people than my family in peacetime, has since I can go back 7 generations in our family. My Dad was a Commander in the USN 1942-1944, I'm certain he was responsible for his command killing the Japan es. As was my brother who was an evac chopper pilot in '70-'72.
Oh well. The planet/world mindset has changed, and continues to evolve as time presses on towards other possible precipices.
