Keeping the Record Straight on the Katrina Story
FoxNews.com ^ | Bill O'Reilly

Keeping the record straight on the Katrina story: that is the subject of this evening's "Talking Points Memo".

Ground zero for the hate Bush movement is The New York Times Company, but its behavior in the wake of the Hurricane Katrina is so over the top, one wonders if CEO Janet Robinson has lost control over her operation.

There's no question the Bush administration was slow in getting relief to the hurricane zone. That's a legitimate criticism, but the personal attacks on President Bush by The New York Times Company, which includes The Boston Globe are beyond the pale.

Some examples:

- Far-left Globe columnist James Carroll: "The bystander-in-chief, of course, is George W. Bush, whose whining self-obsession perfectly embodies what America has done to itself."

- Far-left Times columnist Bob Herbert: "What we witnessed...was the dangerous incompetence and staggering indifference to human suffering of the president and his administration."

- Far-left Times columnist Paul Krugman: "The federal government's lethal ineptitude wasn't just a consequence of Mr. Bush's personal inadequacy; it was a consequence of ideological hostility to the very idea of using government to serve the public good."

So what these Bush haters are saying is that the president doesn't care if people suffer and die, and has geared the U.S. government toward putting Americans in jeopardy.

That's beyond ridiculous. The truth is this. Governor Blanco of Louisiana did not have a disaster plan in place, did not have enough state police and National Guard to secure a city the size of New Orleans, and did not push for federal help soon enough. President Bush was 24 hours too slow in reacting to the disaster. Why? I don't know. And the head of Homeland Security, Michael Chertoff, seemed clueless for days.

This is as good a reason as I've heard, for Blanco to insist that Witt, former FEMA head under Clinton, be "in charge," while not allowing federal control.

It's a two-fer for Blanco.
1) She gets help, from Witt, a FEMA expert, on getting her books in order before an auditor asks to see them.
2) She can imply that Brown/Bush are incompetents compared to Clinton/Witt.

Who runs all those States and all those Cities?

No doubt! I said yesterday, that if NO politicians are that corrupt and inept, the city should probably be under Federal control, just like DC.

The fools are bitching because President Bush didn't personally come to NO and micro-manage a situation that is their responsibility to administer. If the elected 'leaders' down there are that stupid and ineffective, maybe the Feds do need to install some close adult supervision over them.

The real scandal that may come out of this is if the DNC was advising Blanco on what to do, knowing that Bush would take the fall.

That would make Watergate look pale in comparison.

Your piece about disaster preparedness and responsibility contained in the link you provided was great. It was thought provoking and very helpful, especially the suggestion about having a disaster kit. Probably something all of us should have, whether we live on a flood plain or in hurricane/tornado country or not. Thank you.

I might add one more thing to the disaster kit, if no one else thought to do so: Medication (that is, the usual daily medicines taken by those who have chronic illnesses). A friend of mine has a disaster kit something like the one you suggested...she's diabetic, so she keeps a certain amount of her diabetic supplies in her kit. She goes through the kit every several months or so and replaces the insulin so whatever she has on hand is fresh.

You make valid points about being responsible for oneself and not relying on government to take the initiative. I know if I saw flood waters rising or a hurricane or tornado approaching, I'd be long gone away from the trouble.

Thank you...and I agree with the suggstion about medications. My wife is on a necessary medication and we have made sure with our doctor that we have at least a three month supply on hand that she rotates through.

Each person's first aid kit should be approppriately customized to their own family's p[articular circumstances.

I don't appreciate Phone Bill's nightly endorsement of looting--as long as it's only for food. He seems to be focusing on the governor, but seems to be letting the mayor off the hook.

Well, as opposed to the hell hole in the Superdome, I would say it is working out very well for them now.

Thanks to Texas and leaders there and at the national level who had the will and wisdom to make the neccessary calls (which did not happen from the leaders in NO and LA)...those poor people are on an upward track now.

The tragedy in New Orleans is a direct result of 40+ years of failed democrat "leadership". You must be so proud.

The story was yesterday and it was featured on one of my ISP home pages, so I think it was either AP (on Comcast) or MSNBC (on MSN). I'm not finding it on their pages today, but I am wondering if anyone posted it. I never find stories when I search.

More arrogant and ignorant BS from O'Reilly. He's trying to "split the difference" on blame so he can posture as a "fair" commentator.

RE: The truth is this. Governor Blanco of Louisiana did not have a disaster plan in place, did not have enough state police and National Guard to secure a city the size of New Orleans, and did not push for federal help soon enough.

Only the last of his statements above are true. The Governor and the Mayor did have a plan - they didn't follow it. There were plenty of National Guard and police to do the job - she dithered and vacillated and refused to issue the orders to them, or to authorize the the President to do so.

O'Reilly's research and fact-checking are atrocious and incompetent.

Are Governors and Mayors just puppies,

No, but some of them could be accurately described as canines of a more mature persuasion. Senators, too!

Fellow Freepers:

At the suggestion of writer Michelle Malkin last Friday, I have cobbled together a blogsite called Texas Clearinghouse for Katrina Aid to serve as a clearinghouse for refugee efforts in Texas.

Texas is getting more refugees than any other state -- that's fine, we'll take them all -- but we need help providing them with food, clothing, and shelter.

If you are a refugee, you can information that will help you find relief. If you want to donate or volunteer, you can find someone who needs you.

Right now the site mostly covers Houston and Dallas but I will add various churches, schools, and other charities in San Antonio and Ft. Worth tonight. My wife is down at Reunion Arena in Dallas as we speak handing out care packages and otherwise ministering to the refugees as a representative of her employer.

There are a lot of churches and other organizations in Texas that need help in dealing with the problem and I would be most appreciative if you would get the word out.

Many thanks,

Michael McCullough

Stingray blogsite
