TAIPEI: An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale rattled Taiwan on Tuesday and shook buildings in the capital, the Central Weather Bureau said.
The epicentre of the quake, which struck at 9.16 am (0116 GMT) was about 63 km east of Hualien on the east coast, at a depth of about 12 km, the bureau said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
Earthquakes occur frequently in Taiwan, which lies on a seismically active stretch of the Pacific basin.
One of Taiwan's worst-recorded quakes occurred in September 1999. Measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale, it killed more than 2,400 people and destroyed or damaged 50,000 buildings.
A strong earthquake occurred at 01:16:04 (UTC) on Tuesday, September 6th, 2005. The magnitude 6.1 event has been located in the TAIWAN REGION. The hypocentral depth was estimated to be 46 km (28 miles). (This event has been reviewed by a seismologist.)

The 101 is an incredible sight.
The 1,666-foot skyscraper tops the previous record holder, the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, by 183 feet.
"Designing the 101-story building in the earthquake- and typhoon-prone region presented quite a challenge. Engineers had to account for the fact that the tower stands about 650 feet from a major fault line, and that it will face winds of 100 mph.
"Still, Taipei 101 won't hold the title of world's tallest skyscraper for long. Buildings in Shanghai and Dubai are expected to surpass it, as will the Freedom Tower in New York -- on the World Trade Center site.
