Before residents had ever heard the words "Hurricane Katrina," the New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE ran a story warning residents: If you stay behind during a big storm, you'll be on your own!
Editors at TIMES-PICAYUNE on Monday called for every official at the Federal Emergency Management Agency to be fired. In an open letter to President Bush, the paper said: "Our people deserved rescuing. Many who could have been were not. That's to the government's shame."
But the TIMES-PICAYUNE published a story on July 24, 2005 stating: City, state and federal emergency officials are preparing to give a historically blunt message: "In the event of a major hurricane, you're on your own."
Staff writer Bruce Nolan reported some 7 weeks before Katrina: "In scripted appearances being recorded now, officials such as Mayor Ray Nagin, local Red Cross Executive Director Kay Wilkins and City Council President Oliver Thomas drive home the word that the city does not have the resources to move out of harm's way an estimated 134,000 people without transportation."
"In the video, made by the anti-poverty agency Total Community Action, they urge those people to make arrangements now by finding their own ways to leave the city in the event of an evacuation.
"You're responsible for your safety, and you should be responsible for the person next to you," Wilkins said in an interview. "If you have some room to get that person out of town, the Red Cross will have a space for that person outside the area. We can help you."

Happy to oblige!
You can thank me later!
Why do you think the looters were stealing DVD players and plasma tv's?
LOL
Rippin' off DVD players to watch Nagin's evac vid. Good one!
And like everything else the dims in LA did, a day late & a dollar short...
I heard on TV that they were doing it cause they were hungry and were trying to feed thier families. I know, I know, I didn't know you could eat them either, but everdently in New Orleans........
They were planning to watch the DVD's while riding the NO school buses out of town...oops!
I don't know how much the Feds are going to give LA for rebuilding but they had better be sure that NO ONE in LA government has access to a penny.
Thank you! ;^)
That, right there, will be the biggest challenge in attempting to rebuild New Orleans. Corruption is so steeped in that city, that any Federal monies spent rebuilding are likely to wind up in some modern-day Huey Long's pockets.
The people who LIVE New Orleans know, or should know, that a levee can give way at any time.
The people who LIVE on the Gulf Coast know, or should know, to get the hell out of Dodge when a hurricane approaches.
The people who LIVE on the Gulf Coast and in a below-sea-level city in particular should be prepared for this kind of 'disaster'.
People everwhere know, or should know, that Mother Nature is in charge and will eventually win out.
Only arrogant fools think they can sit around and expect divine providence, the tooth fairy, or President Bush, to save them from their own unadulturated arrogance.
That's a shitload of buses!
Thank God that FEMA sent in supplies BEFORE the hurricane. It was not the city that got those truckloads of MRE's and water in there. Nagin told the people there would be no food and water and they should bring their own. Can you imagine how those people in the dome would have faired on Nagin's bring your own policy alone?
"Thats true but newspapers telling them that cost 50 whole cents and they didn't own TV's to hear it until AFTER the hurricane so the peoples in New Orleans didn't know they were suppose to get out."
Maybe Nagin shoulda done it as a rap gig, and put it out on CDs.
Betcha it woulda been heard that way.
I wonder where Nagin kept his stash
music to the ears of the predatory class no doubt
Hey wait . . I think I see a bus. ;)
LOL...GOOD ONE
bttt
Democrats whine without stopping, never taking responsibility for their own actions or lack of. The more they whine the sicker people are of them. Sick enough to get to the ballot box and make sure they never run this country again.
I thought you might be interested in this. Might be an answer to your Red Cross question.
