Former first lady and mother to President Bush said Monday that evacuees from New Orleans have found a home in Houston.
"Almost everyone Ive talked to says we're going to move to Houston," Barbara Bush told NPR.
"What Im hearing is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality.
"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this (she chuckles slightly)--this is working very well for them."
Editor & Publisher notes the former First Lady's remarks were aired this evening on National Public Radio's "Marketplace" program.
Developing...
A fine example of something that shouldn't have been said on-microphone.
They brought her along? No decent assisted-living homes in Maine where they could'a parked her for a while?
At least she didnt say that in Texas you are expected to get up on Tuesday morning and go to work, or go to work finding work.
That 5:30 AM wake up call will get their ire up.
so that they can start up again, independently, in a larger area. It's NOT like they're so centrally-organized that they can't make their own decisions/plans.
Take a double-handful of grubs and widely toss them all over your lawn. ARE they easier to kill now, or less of a threat, than if you had dropped them all together in one spot?
When confronted with the truth, there is outrage, then mockery, then acceptance.
"I am trying to figure out what she said that you object to?"
Her statement: "so many of the people in the arena, here, you know, were underprivileged anyway so this.. is working very well for them"
Many of the people now in Houston spent 2 or 3 days sitting on a sidewalk outside the New Orleans Convention Center.. watching others die without medical treatment of dehydration and other preventable causes... many have probably lost family members, as well as whatever possessions they had.
It's just a bit insensitive to show up and start telling people that they should be happy with recent events and their current situation... particularly as a multimillionaire.
"With guidance and the right help, many of the evacuees may build better lives for both themselves and the next generation."
That's an admirable goal WHEN stated that way.
I wonder if her role as the Quaker Oats spokesperson is in jeopardy now.
Please don't try to justify that statement.
Like Hastert's comments, it's not what you say, it's when you say it. There is a time and place to tell the truth, now was not the time.
If Jay Leno said it, we'd all be laughing our butts off.
No biggie.
Go Barbara!
Thank you! I had not thought of that - yee haw - no more having to chase across the state line for real gumbo. :o) Texas will be the new Gumbo Capitol of the World.
God bless Barbara. She just tells it like she sees it!
I don't think the MSM wants to take on Barbara Bush. That woman is no pushover and isn't afraid to mince words. I caught a sliver of Bush 41's comments today and he said she is mad and loaded for bear.
I'm pretty sure we just bussed a good portion of the gangs to Houston et. al.
"They will have culture shock. Being treated with respect and not as a voting bloc."
I think so too...Mrs. Bush was stating the obvious...Texans are treating their guests like family....going out & depleting the stores of linens, toys, books....in other words, guarding their dignity when they are in such dire straits. It's appreciated. Way to go Texas!
Many preachers in Dallas (black) churches were making exactly your point.
Among the general "God works in mysterious ways" points, several of them said directly to the LA visitors that God has delivered you to a place where you can take control of yourself and your destiny, if only you will make the effort to work at it.
One very emphatic pastor said "God saw the misery of his people in New Orleans and just shut the whole thing down! Now, are you going to fret and fear and complain or are you going to thank God for your deliverance?"
That viewpoint really made me stop and think.
My theory is kinda off the wall but in one sense these people have been held "hostage" for generations by the democrat machine in that state who were loathe to give up the slavery concept. By holding them back, they kept control of them. This is the reason the state officials and the DNC are getting hysterical. The best thing that could happen would be that they discover they can belong to a "can-do" society in Houston...... to do this and realize they can be self sufficient without Daddy Democrat doing it for them. Even if just a small percentage of them manage this......we can dream, can't we?
Even with the honorable effort to help out, I am still quite sure that what you said is crossing the minds of many.
Jessie ain't gonna like this one bit... He's got buses already lined up to bring em back.
She is bullet proof. She can say anything and get away with it. Besides, what she said was OK.

Oh yeah, I would love to see the media try and pick a fight with Barbra Bush. You dont mess with her. Period. You think that lt.Gen was straight forward today? He has nothing on her.
